All rights reserved, http:/ ABSTRACT The present study, consisting of two researches, has investigated the relationship between the language learning strategy use and the success of English study for English majors in China. The first re
2、search has investigated whether the Chinese English majors have difficulties or problems in using appropriate language learning strategies when learning English; and the second research has explored whether there is a difference in the language learning strategy use between the high TEM-4 (Test for
3、English Majors, Grade Four) score achievers and the low TEM-4 score achievers. The dissertation comprises seven chapters. Chapter One provides both a background and a context for the study. English education for English majors in China and the test of TEM-4 are introduced as important fundamental ba
4、ckground information. The objectives and expected outcome of the present study are also introduced to provide a panorama for the whole study. Chapter Two presents a review of related literature and researches on language learning strategies and language learning strategy instruction to locate the pr
5、esent study in the research area of language learning strategies and language learning strategy instruction. Twelve most influential definitions of language learning strategies are introduced and discussed, and five main characteristics of language learning strategies are summarized. The researcher
6、also investigates five taxonomies of language learning strategies and probes into the researches on language learning strategy instruction in the same chapter. Chapter Three makes a brief review of the five most commonly used research methodologies for language learning strategy researches, which he
7、lps to form the research questions and research methods of the present study. 8、neral attitude of the first-year English majors towards language learning strategy instruction. Three research questions are raised and 125 first-year English majors at CJC, SISU participate in the research. A questionnaire is designed to collect the important information from the 125 subjects. The
9、research has revealed the fact that it is necessary to implement language learning strategy instruction with the first-year English majors in China. In Chapter Five, a preliminary attempt has been made to explore the relationship between the use of language learning strategies and the English profic
10、iency of two groups of English majors, one group of 11 high TEM-4 score achievers and the other group of 12 low TEM-4 score achievers. Rebecca Oxfords Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) (1990) has been used to collect data from the 23 subjects. The research shows that there exists diffe
11、rence in language learning strategy use between the high TEM-4 score achievers and the low TEM-4 score achievers. In other words, there is difference in language learning strategy use between good and poor English majors. The research has also discovered that 28 language learning strategies from six
12、 parts are relevant to the successful improvement of English learning efficiency and English proficiency for the English majors, 25 of which, concerning learning with others, organizing and evaluating your learning, using all your mental processes and managing your emotions, have the most positive e
13、ffect. Based on the findings of the two researches reported in the previous two chapters, Chapter Six proposes a plan on the language learning strategy instruction with Chinese English majors. The researcher introduces three fundamental principles for the instruction and works out a sample plan cons
14、isting of three essential issues: beginning time and duration, steps and contents of the instruction. Chapter Seven, the last chapter of the dissertation, concludes the research findings and analyzes both the contributions and limitations of the study. The chapter is concluded with the researcher pr

16、clusion that the Chinese English majors need language learning strategy instruction and 25 language learning strategies from Oxfords SILL (1990) are most relevant to the successful improvement of English proficiency for these students. Based on the findings, some essential elements of the language l
17、earning strategy instruction with the Chinese English majors have been discussed in a pedagogical plan with the students at College of Journalism and Communications (CJC), SISU, which serves to call for further researches into language learning strategy instruction with more English majors in China.
