1、欧亨利钱和弓箭手Mammon and the Archer by O. Henry1 Old Anthony Rockwall, who made millions of dollars by making and selling RockwalTs soap, stood at the window of his large Fifth Avenue house. He was looking out at his neighbor, G. Van Schuylight Suffolk-Jones. His neighbor is a proud member of a proud old
2、New York family. He came out of his door and got into a cab. He looked once quickly, as usual, at Anthony RockwalTs house. The look showed that Suffolk-Jones was a very important man, while a rich soapmaker was nothing. nI will have this house painted red, white, and blue next summer, said the Soap
3、King to himself. And well see how he likes that11 Everyone on wheels in New York City seemed to be hurrying to this place.86 Tm very sorry/1 said Richard. He sat down again.87 We cant move. They wont get this straight in an hour. If I hadnt dropped the ring, we-n88 nLet me see the ring, said Miss La
4、ntry. Since we really cant hurry, I dont care.89 I didnt want to go to the theater. I dont like the theater. 90 At eleven that night someone stopped at the door of Anthonys room.91 Come in, shouted Anthony. He had been reading and he put down his book.92 It was Ellen. HThey are going to be married A
5、nthony/1 she said. 93 HShe has promised to marry our Richard. 94 On their way to the theater their cab was stopped in the street. It was two hours before it could move again. And oh, brother Anthony, dont ever talk about the power of money again.96 It was a little ring, a true love ring, that was th
6、e cause of our Richard finding his happiness.97 He dropped it in the street and had to get out and find it.98 And before they could continue, the cab was caught among the others.99 He told her of his love there in the cab. Money is nothing, Anthony. True love is everything.H100 Tm glad the boy got w

9、 soap we made, said Anthony. I gave you $5,000 yesterday.109 nI paid out $300 more of my own money,n said Kelly.110 nIt cost more than I expected. I got the cabs, most of them, for $5, but anything with two horses was $10.in I had to pay most to the cops-$50 I paid to two, and the others $20 and $25
10、.112 But didnt it work beautifully, Mr. Rockwall? They were all on time.113 And it was two hours before anyone could move.1114 Thirteen hundred-there you are, Kelly/1 said Anthony, giving him the money. A thousand for you, and the $300 of your own money thatyou had to spend. You like money, do you,
11、Kelly?11116 Ido, said Kelly. 117 Anthony stopped Kelly when he was at the door. 118 Did you see/1 asked he, anywhere on the street yesterday alittle fat boy with no clothes on? Carrying arrows? 119 Kelly looked surprised. No. I didnt. But if he was like that,with no clothes, perhaps the cops caught
12、him. 120 nI thought Cupid wouldnt be there/1 Anthony said, laughing.Good-bye, Kelly. And then Anthony Rockwall turned around and shouted, Mike! in a loud voice.10 He never used a bell to call a servant.ii HTell my son/1 he said when the servant came, to come to me before he leaves the house.11 12 Wh
13、en young Rockwall entered the room, the old man put down the newspaper he had been reading.13 Richard, said Anthony Rockwall, what do you pay for the soap that you use?14 Richard had finished college six months before, and he had come home to live.15 He had not yet learned to understand his father.
14、He was always being surprised.16 He said, Six dollars for twelve pieces.17 And your clothes?18 HAbout sixty dollars, usually.n19You are a gentleman/1 said his father. nI have heard of young men who pay twenty-four dollars for twelve pieces of soap, and more than a hundred for clothes.21 You have as
15、much money to throw away as anyone else has.But what you do is reasonable.22 I myself use Rockwall Soap, because it is the best23 When you pay more than ten cents for a piece of soap, you are paying for a sweet strong smell and a name.24 But fifty cents is good for a young man like you. You are a ge
16、ntleman.25 People say that if a man is not a gentleman, his son cant be a gentleman; but perhaps his sons son will be a gentleman.26 But they are wrong. Money does it faster than that.27 Money has made you a gentleman. It has almost made me a gentleman.28 I have become very much like the two gentlem
17、en who own the houses on each side of us.29 My manners are now almost as bad as theirs. But they still cant sleep at night because a soapmaker lives in this house.31 There are some things that money cant do, said the young man rather sadly.32 Dont say that/1 said old Anthony. Shes going to Europe the day after tomorrow. Shefs going to be there two years.46 Fm allowed to see her alone tomorrow evening for a few minut

Fm going to meet her with a cab.48 Then well drive fast to the theater where she must meet her mother and some other people.49 Do you think she would listen to me then? 50 No. Or in the theater? No. Or after the theater? No! No, father, this is one trouble tha
23、t your money cant help.51 We cant buy one minute of time with money. If we could, rich people would live longer.52 Theres no hope of talking with Miss Lantry before she sails. 53 Richard, my boy/1 said old Anthony, Pm glad youre not really sick.54 You say money wont buy time? Perhaps it wont buy all
24、 of time, but Fve seen it buy some little pieces.55 That evening his sister Ellen came to Anthony, to talk about the troubles that lovers have. nHe told me all about it,” said brother Anthony. nI told him he could have all the money he wanted.57 Then he began to say that money was no use to him. He
25、said money couldnt help.1158 Oh, Anthony/1 said Ellen, nI wish you wouldnt think so much of money. Money is no help for love.59 Love is all powerful. If he had only spoken to her earlier! She could never say no to our Richard.60 But now I fear it is too late. All your gold cannot buy happiness for y
26、our son.”61 At eight the next evening Ellen took an old gold ring and gave it to Richard.62 Wear it tonight, she said. nYour mother gave it to me.63 She asked me to give it to you when you had found the girl you loved.n64 Young Rockwall took the ring and tried to put it on his little finger. It was
27、too small. He put it inside his coat, in a place where he thought it would be safe. And then he called for his cab.66 At the station he met Miss Lantry.67 We must not keep my mother and the others waiting/1 said she.68 To Wallacks Theater as fast as you can drive/1 said Richard to the cabby.69 They
28、rolled along Forty-second Street to Broadway and from there to Thirty-fourth Street.70 Then young Richard quickly ordered the cabby to stop.71 nFve dropped a ring/1 he said, getting out HIt was my mothers and I dont want to lose it.72 This will take only a minute. I saw where it fell.”73 In less tha
29、n a minute he was again in the cab with the ring.74 But within that minute, a wagon had stopped in front of the cab.75 The cabby tried to pass on the left, but a cab was there. He tried to pass on the right, but another cab was there.77 He could not go back. He was caught where he was and could not
30、move in any direction.78 These sudden stops of movement will happen in the city.79 Instead of moving along the street in their usual orderly way, all the wagons and cabs will suddenly be mixed together and stopped.80 Why dont you drive further? said Miss Lantry. Well be late.81 Richard stood up in t
31、he cab and looked around.82 He saw a stream of cabs and wagons and everything else on wheels rolling toward the corner where Broadway, Sixth Avenue and Thirty-fourth Street meet83 They came from all directions. And more and more were rolling toward them.84 More and more were caught there. Drivers and cabbies shouted.
