1、WHY THE MOUNTAIN WAS NAMED KHUSH-A STORY FROM MONGOLIA After a beautiful wedding,a young boy asked his grandmother,“granny,were customs different when you were young?”She replied“of course.When I was young,Lamas and princes would take everything from Arats,the common people,including the greenest of
2、 grasses,musical instruments and the best pieces of meat.They even took away some of their beautiful daughters”.Then the grandmother looked sad because she remembered a sad time when a beautiful girl was taken by a prince.The grandson asked her“why are you sad grandma?”“She said,do you see that moun
3、tain over there?That mountain is called Khush,which means stop in the local language.let me tell you why it is called Mount Khush”.“There was once this young girl called Dejid.She was slender and beautiful with a wide shiny face,black eyes and long black braids.Many young men looked at her and tried
4、 to win her heart.She was engaged to Balbar,a simple Arat,no different to anyone else,but he was someone special to her.The wedding was going to be organised soon by the adults.But when Dejid went to the temple for a blessing,Prince Lu,a local prince saw her and decided that she was going to be anot
5、her one of his wives.A man came to her parents house with beautiful gifts from the prince.The parents could see that the prince had a lot of money and a high position,so they did not hesitate in giving their daughter away in marriage and both sides made arrangements for the wedding.They tried to kee
6、p it a secret because they knew Dejid wouldnt agree with it,but it was impossible to keep the secret away from the neighbours.Soon everyone knew about it and were all excited.The kids were so happy because they would receive delicious sweets”.The grandmother continued,“in the summer there were many
7、well dressed people who came to Dejids familys yurt,or tent,followed by the Lamas who were high priests with their bells and drums.The lamas read their prayers and then the wedding ceremony started.Everyone ate and drank and feasted happily until it was time to take the bride to the husbands yurt.Ev
8、eryone could see how sad she looked.When the best men tried to lift her up on the horse,she tried to fight them.She looked like a bird that had its wings cut off.Everyone was crying and howling out of pity for her,including the children.”“But tears could not save the girl.Prince Lu was rich and powe
9、rful.One day everyone saw her return to the camp as she tried to run away from her husband.The princes mean found her and brought her straight back.She tried to escape a number of times but was always returned to her husband.The grandmother was trying her best not to very when she said to her grands
10、on,“now comes the sad part”“She was so unhappy,she didnt want to be with the prince anymore,she only wanted to be with Balbar nd nobody else.One day,she could not handle it anymore,so she rode her horse trying to escape.Some men were riding after her and she reached the top of the hill.One of the ri
11、ders caught up with her,but she jumped off her horse and disappeared.The rider who caught up with her also disappeared after her.It was very dusty so nobody could see clearly what happened.The other riders stopped and everyone at the camp went to the top of the hill because they knew what happened t
12、o them.The looked down and saw Dejids body and next to it a body of a young man.They later found out what truly happened,that man was Balbar,it was he and his friends who was riding after her.When he rode after her,he yelled out“Khush”,which means“stop”.She didnt hear that because of the loud noise
13、of the horses gallop.She couldnt handle being the princes wife anymore that she jumped off the edge of the mountain.Balbar couldnt imagine life without her,so he jumped down after her.”“So that,my dear grandson is why that mountain over there is called Mount Khush“,thee grandmother said.Oh,what a sa
