Even our dog, normally quiet and reserved, would prancearound the yard, barking and offering a playful growlor two.Giving and

4、 receiving Christmas gifts were the main events. I guess its that way with most families. Both practices had their advantages and intrigue. For me, the receiving aspect held a higher priority. Santa dropped off one present per child at our home, occasionally two. All other gifts had to come from our

5、 parents, family, or friends. I think Santa also filled the stockings we hung from the fireplacemantel. In the morning, our socks contained chocolate bars, oranges, assorted nuts, and other handy items we needed for school.On Christmas Eve, we put out a plate of homemade cookies for Santa on the fir

6、eplace mantel, usually chocolate-chip or gingerbread ones that Mom helped us bake, and a glass of skim milk. He never ate the whole cookie, just took a bite of each one and a sip or two of milk. With a ton of deliveries to finish before morning, he must have been in a hurry. One year, I put out a fe

7、w carrot slices and some peanut butter on celery, but those were left untouched. I got the point; next year, we went back to cookies.Santas gifts were always nice, but not really a surprise. My sister and I had already talked to him or one of his helpers at the Montrose Mall or written him a letter

8、a few weeks earlier. Sometimes, we did both, so Santa knew about our wish list. And he was pretty good at remembering what we talked about because we usually received at least one of the things we mentioned. Even so, I liked the gifts my parents gave better. They seemed more personal. Parental prese

9、nts were joint gifts, addressed from both of them, but I knew the difference. Moms usually gave socks, underwear, and knitted slippers. Dads, on the other hand, understood what little boys wanted most. Therefore, if I received a baseball glove, ten-speed bicycle, or Radio Flyer wagon, it probably ca

10、me from Dad.The only thing I disliked about the holiday was my fathers disappearance on Christmas Eve. He always left right after dinner and stayed out most of the evening. Of course, being a child, I went to bed early, so that may have affected my perception of time. Nevertheless, I would not see h

11、im again until Christmas Day. In the morning, he had difficulty waking up. He kept yawning, too. His eyes looked tired and bloodshot. If I glanced into my parents bedroom, I could see that Dad had not slept on his side of the bed. He must have been out all night doing something. But what?Then one Ch

12、ristmas Eve, out of concern, I asked Mom the dreaded question, “Why does Dad leave every Christmas Eve, and where does he go thats so important?”I realized my father, a Los Angeles County firefighter, might leave unexpectedly if the firehouse captain asked him to cover a shift or help with an emerge

13、ncy. However, if that were the case, Dad would be wearing his uniform, not his regular clothing. Mom only shrugged her shoulders and smiled at my concerns. She never seemed to worry about his untimely departures; she just kissed him goodbye as if everything were fine.Years later, after cancer took D

14、ads life prematurely, Mom explained the reason for his mysterious absences. “Your father would drive downtown to Montrose for some last-minute Christmas shopping. He would walk through the stores looking for broken itemsthings he could repaint, repair, or refurbish. Before the days of full refunds a

15、nd instant in-store credits, most shop owners wanted to offset their losses by selling worn-out demos, dismembered toys, and other defective products.
