Although I graduated with honors and had plenty of solid recommendations from professors as well as collegiate work experience, finding a job proved to be a near-impossible task. Eventually, I stopped focusing my search for jobs in my field and broadened my

3、reach to other entry-level jobs. Thankfully, I landed a job a few months after graduation with a golf club back home. The pay was low, but it was a job, and it would provide enough to pay the rent and other bills.As the months went by, I proved myself a hard worker and was rewarded with more respons

4、ibility. This responsibility included taking on multiple duties outside the scope of my position, but unfortunately it did not come with more pay. Due to those extra responsibilities, it was necessary that I work on-site not only after hours, but also most holidays. For the first time, I found mysel

5、f facing the reality that I wouldnt be with my family during the holidays.When November rolled around and I was asked to work on Thanksgiving, I couldnt help feeling deep disappointment.Then, a week before Thanksgiving, I received a call from my paternal grandfather. He had decided to stay in town a

6、nd wanted to know why I wasnt with the rest of the family. I explained to him that my job required that I work on Thanksgiving, and that my benefits didnt include paid time off. He asked, “Want to go to Thanksgiving lunch with me?”I thought about it for a minute. I didnt have to be at work during th

7、e lunch rush; it was only for dinner. “Sure, Id love that. Do you want to come over, and Ill cook?”“No,” he laughed. “Dont go spending any money. Well go out. Cracker Barrel is open for Thanksgiving. Well go there.”“Oh, okay. That sounds fine then. Thanks, Grandpa!”I was a little dismayed at the pro

8、spect of going to a restaurant for Thanksgiving. After all, I was used to home-cooked meals for the holidays. I was a decent cook myself and happy to cook dinner, but I didnt dare argue with Grandpa!Grandpa arrived at my apartment on Thanksgiving morning. We watched a bit of the Thanksgiving Day Par

9、ade on TV, something I always enjoyed doing as a child, and then ventured out to Cracker Barrel. The parking lot was packed. Thankfully, we found a spot, and I squeezed through the large crowd to put our names on the waiting list. While we waited, we went outside and sat down in the rocking chairs t

10、o chat. I found myself laughing and trading stories with Grandpa, and realized after every chuckle and creak of the rocking chair that it was a very familiar and calming experience. As a child on warm summer days, Grandpa would always take me out to the front porch, and we would rock away in his hom

11、emade rocking chairs, guessing which color car would drive by next. Id forgotten how much fun I had playing such a simple game with him, and how much I cherished the one-on-one time with my grandfather.Fortunately, we only waited a few minutes before our name was called, and we were feasting away on

12、 the Thanksgiving special.“Now see,” Grandpa laughed between bites, “this is every bit as good as any other food.”I nodded, my mouth full.“And this way,” he continued, “you have no dishes to clean. We can just go back and relax.”After we ate, we browsed the country store for a bit, and then Grandpa

13、paid for our lunch.“Oh, Grandpa, you didnt have to do that! I can pay for us.” I tugged on his arm.“Oh, hush,” he laughed. “Ive got it.”I thanked him, and we made our way back to my apartment. We sat down for a while, and talked about how great the food was and how much fun we had. After an hour or

14、so, Grandpa pulled himself up and stretched.“All right. Come on with me!” he shouted. I laughed. Any time Grandpa took his leave, he always invited me along.“Id love to, but you know I have to go to work.” I smiled.He smiled and chuckled. “Oh, I know. You be careful tonight, okay?”I nodded and wrapp

15、ed my arms around him in a tight hug. “Thank you so much for today.”“Oh, youre welcome.”“Seriously, thank you. It means a lot.” I squeezed him just a bit tighter. “I love you.”“Love you, too,” he said quietly. He gave me a tight hug back and headed out for the evening. I headed off to work, feeling

16、happier and more uplifted than I expected.The following year, I was still at the same job and still had to work the holiday. Not wanting me to be alone that year either, Grandpa invited me out to Cracker Barrel again.In 2010, I found myself a new job within my field of study. However, I was pulling

17、long hours because I wanted to prove myself a capable employee, and the pressure was really high in those first few months. Although I had paid time off as part of my new benefits package, I elected not to travel out of town with the rest of the family. Grandpa didnt go out of town either. Instead,

18、he invited me out to lunch again that Thanksgiving.As the years passed and I built a career path for myself, I had more than enough vacation time to take if I wanted to travel out of town. However, I realized that I had a new tradition that meant the world to me: spending Thanksgiving with my grandf

19、ather.Every year, we spend Thanksgiving at Cracker Barrel together. We rock in the rocking chairs, swap stories, browse the store, tell each other secrets, and playfully argue about who is going to pick up the tab. I always lose. Its our special time, just the two of us, and I cherish and look forwa
