The US TV series swarm into Chinese market over the network and they are accepted in popularity by Chinese people. The main method of w
4、atching these TV series is that people watch the original TV series with the assist of Chinese subtitles. Therefore, subtitles translation has become the point translators focus on. Gossip Girl is a fashionable soap, which is made heavily by CW (Columbia Broad-casting System and Warner Bros. Network
5、). There are a lot of fashion elements which grasp the influence of modern technology such as telephone and blogs in their life. From the beginning of Gossip Girl on, it is popular among young people with high ratings. Subtitles translation plays a vital role in the high success of Gossip Girl in Ch
6、ina. The prevalence of Gossip girl in China attributes to the application of subtitles translation because it was played online. Subtitles translation is a process that people make continuous choices of language in different context to satisfy the needs of communication. This opinion offers the poss
7、ibility of analyzing subtitles translation in light of the Adaptation Theory. Due to the limitation of space, time and specific context, subtitles translation has its own characteristics, including listening, comprehensive, momentarily, popularity and notes-missing. And translators must adapt to both the linguistic context covering the lexical level, syntax level, language style and the discourse context in translation and
9、 the communicative context including the mental world, the social world and the physical world of the target audience, leaving the target audience get what the original audience feel. Take the fifth season of Gossip Girl, this thesis will study subtitles translation of the US TV series from the pers
10、pective of the Adaptation Theory, trying to prove that the Adaptation Theory has a strong explanatory power for translation. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, which mainly presents the research purpose, research methodology and the structure of this paper. The se
11、cond chapter of this thesis is literature review, introducing the research background and the previous and present studies of Gossip Girl as well as subtitles translation in details. Chapter three is the framework of the Adaptation theory. In this part, the author presents the Adaptation Theory and
12、its application to translation. At the beginning of Chapter four, the author introduced Gossip Girl. Then based on the fifth season of Gossip Girl the author analyzes the subtitle translation from the angle of the Adaptation Theory, proving that it is possible to apply the Adaptation Theory into sub
13、titles translation. The last chapter concludes the whole thesis. Through the study of subtitles translation of Gossip Girl, we know that the adaptation theory possesses strong explanatory power and application, but it cannot explain all language phenomena in subtitles translation. It still needs to
14、be further studied. The author pointed out some limitations of this paper. 15、五季为例 专业 ：外国语言学及应用语言学 随着对外文化交流的深入，中国与英美国家影视文化之间的交流日趋频繁，美国电视连续 剧通过网络涌入中国，广为中国人所接受与欢迎，其主耍观赏形式是利用中文字幕来观赏原文影 片，所以字幕翻译也就成为翻译工作者关注的焦点。 绯闻女孩是由 CW (哥伦比亚及华纳兄弟联合电视网 ） 重金打造的时尚偶像剧，该剧拥 有非常多的时尚流行元素，紧紧抓住现代科技，诸如手机和博客，对于人们生活的影响，绯闻 女孩自开播以来就收到年轻人的追捧，收视率很高，在中国的热播字幕翻译起到了很大的作用。 绯闻女孩的在线播放导致其在中国的盛行必然与字幕翻译有关。字幕翻译需耍译者在 不同的语境下
16、不断做出选择语言，以满足当前交际的需要，而这一点正好是顺应论的主耍内容， 它为从顺应论的角度探究字幕翻译提供了可能性。字幕翻译受时间，空间及其特定语境的限制， 有其自身的特点，即：聆听性、综合性、瞬间性、通俗性和无注性。美剧字幕翻译是 个复杂的 动态选择过程，译者需要根据其特点顺应译语的词汇、句子、语言风格和上下文等语言语境，以 及译语观众心理世界、社交世界因素和物理世界因素等交际语境，有效地使译语观众得到与原语 观 众同样的效果。本文以緋闻女孩第五季为例，从顺应论的角度来探究美剧的字幕翻译，旨 在证明顺应论对翻译具有强大的解释力。 本文共有五章组成。第一章为引言部分，主要介绍了本文的研究目的

23、th economic globalization and Chinas successful accession to the World Trade Organization, more and more US TV series rush into the China market. These TV series were widely accepted and welcomed by the Chinese people, and influenced their life. Up to now, the main way of watching these TV series is
24、 watching the subtitles in both Chinese and English. Therefore, subtitles translation plays an important part in the cross-cultural communication. As a way of cross-cultural communication, it has permeated a lot of fields, such as history, economy, politics, and military even open class from the mos
25、t famous university. However, in the wake of prosperous entertainment in the 21st century, subtitles translation of US TV series are rapidly wanning and much attention is paid to the “Cinderella(the figurative expression of subtitles translation), which once neglected by the translation field. 1.1 P
26、urposes of the Research Gossip Girl, the US TV Series, stands out from many youth idol drama since its broadcasting in 2007, which seized the youth market quickly and created a miracle in the history of US Series of idol dramas, and ifs based on the bestselling novel written by US author Cecily von
27、Ziegesar. The idol drama, which describes the campus life of rich students in the Upper East Side in New York, brings a GzW Boom” among the global youth. No matter on the Internet or in the real life, Gossip Girl has been a hot topic discussed by young people. It is rare for the high popularity and
28、influence among the youth. We can say that Gossip Girl has become one striking landscape in popular culture these days. For the first time, the director applied a lot of pop elements to Gossip Girl, whafs more, its instant play and close to the audience won more attention. The fifth season of Gossip
29、 Girl represents the college life of the leading actortheir internship, their new relationship and the exchange of their social roles and so on. There is no doubt that the popularity of the fifth season of Gossip Girl in America has a lot of reasons, but there must have been one more reason why it i

31、ers the newest text that is worth to study for the research on subtitles translation. The subtitles translation must take both the linguistic context and communicative context into account, which are the main content of the adaptation theory. This thesis will analyze the subtitles translation of the
32、 fifth season of Gossip Girl in light of Adaptation Theory. Adaptation Theory was first proposed by Jef Verschueren in his book Understanding Pragmatics, which was called ua promising theory that possesses strong explanatory power and application， for it understands the pragmatics from a new perspec
33、tive.” In the process of translation, the translators need to consider the context relations, language structure and other aspects when they made the best choice. A lot of problems of translation can get good explanation in the framework of Adaptation Theory. Therefore, as for subtitles translation
34、which plays a more and more important role in the field of translation, the Adaptation Theory has a strong explanatory power. It is necessary to study the application of adaptation theory in subtitles translation. Moreover, this new perspective will be helpful to understand the nature of translation
35、. 1.2 Research Methodology All the samples listed in this thesis are selected from YYeTs (the abbreviation of Ying Yin English Tv Shows) translation studio (人人影视字幕组 ) Among the most influential subtitle studios in China, YYeTs translation studio pursues the quality of subtitle. Each of the films is
36、required to be the best as long as they can. The subtitles they translated are opened to the fans of US TV series in order to find errors and provide revision by them. Then according to their revision, YYeTs translation studio will promulgate a version of revision. If the translation is not still go
37、od enough, YYeTs will continue to put out revision again until the results are splendid. So their version of subtitle translation is mainly chosen as the data. In this paper, the author chooses descriptive-explanatory methodology with a case study as the research method. The methodology is mainly a
38、qualitative study. Numerous 2 Introduction studies have shown that applying the adaptation theory to the subtitle translation is possible. And the way they explain the adaptation theory is from four angles, including context-related factors, structural factors, dynamics of adaptation process and the
39、 salience of adaptation. Especially, the author analyzes the subtitles translation from both the perspectives of linguistic context and communicative context in the light of adaptation theory. 1.3 Thesis Structure This thesis is composed of five chapters. The beginning of this paper is a brief introduction of whole study, including three parts: purposes of the research, research method as well as the overall structure of this thesis. The second chapter of this thesis makes a review of previous studies of Gossip Girl and Subtitles Translation. In this part,
