5、toftheworldsPCsandthesedaysafewofitssmartphonesandtabletstoo(andaccountedforabout25%ofrevenueinthefirstninemonthsofthisfinancialyear).Alongsidethisaretheserverandtoolsdivision(alsoabout25%);onlineservices(4%),business(30%)andentertainmentanddevices,includingtheXboxgamesconsole(14%).MrBallmerseemstoh
6、avedecidedthatthissystemhaslackedco-ordination.Wearerallyingbehindasinglestrategyasonecompany,hewrotetohisstaff,notacollectionofdivisionalstrategies.ThatiswhatMicrosofthashaduntilnow.TheWindowsdivision,forexample,wasnotoriousforploughingitsownfurrowonereason,somethink,forthedepartureofStevenSinofsky
7、,itshead,latelastyear.ThestructurehasnotservedMicrosoftwellastheworldhasmovedfromdesktopandlaptoppersonalcomputers,wherethecompanymadeitsmoney,intomobiledevices,whereithasstruggled,andthecloud.Sometechnologies,suchasoperatingsystemsandcloudinfrastructure,havebeenspreadacrossdivisions.Wewillseeourpro
8、ductlineholistically,MrBallmerwrote,notasasetofislands.Sothenewarrangementhasamorehorizontallook,withfourengineeringgroupsorganisedonfunctionallines.Alltheoperatingsystems,whetherforPCs,mobiledevicesorthecloud,willbeinonegroup.Deviceswillbeinanother.Athird,applications,coverscoretechnologiesinsearch
9、(ie,theBingsearchengine)andproductivity(Officeandsoforth).Andthecloudgroupwilllookafterdatacentres,databasesandtheneedsofbigcompanies.NooneknowswhethertherealignedMicrosoftwillbeanimblerMicrosoftuntilresultsstarttoflow.(Thecompanyisduetoreportfourth-quarterfigures,presumablyontheoldlines,onJuly18th.
