1、英语故事 比尔斯 猫头鹰溪桥的故事,An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge1 by Ambrose Biercei Our story today is called, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.It was written by Ambrose Bierce.2 The occurrence, or event, in our story takes place during the Civil War of the eighteen sixties between the American states of the n
2、orth and the states of the south.3 A group of soldiers is hanging a southern farm owner for trying to stop northern military movements across the Owl Creek Bridge.4 In the last moments of his life, the southern prisoner dreams he has escaped.5 And everything that happens in the story is really the i
3、mages in the prisoners mind just before he dies.6 Here is Shep ONeal with our story.7 A man stood on a railroad bridge in Alabama looking down into the swift waters of the Owl Creek River below.8 The mans hands were tied behind his back. Now, half-awake, half asleep, he found himself at the door of
4、his house.108 His lovely wife ran to him.109 Ah, at last.110 He put his arms about his beautiful wife.in And just then, he felt a terrible pain in the back of his neck. 112 All around him there was a great white light and the sound of a cannon.113 And then.then.darkness and silence.114 The prisoner
5、was dead. 115 His neck was broken.116 His body hung at the end of a rope.117 It kept swinging from side to side.118Swinging gently under a hole in Owl Creek Bridge. There was a rope around his neck.10 The rope was tied to part of the bridge above him.ii Three soldiers of the northern army stood near
6、 the prisoner, waiting for their captains orders to hang him.12 Everybody was ready.13 The prisoner stood quietly.14 His eyes were not covered.15 He looked down and saw the water under the bridge.16 Now, he closed his eyes.17 He wanted his last thoughts to be of his wife and children.18 But, as he t
7、ried to think of them, he heard sounds again and again.19 The sounds were soft.20 But they got louder and louder and started to hurt his ears.21The pain was strong. He wanted to shout23 But the sounds he heard were just those of the river running swiftly under the bridge.24 The prisoner quickly open
8、ed his eyes and looked at the water.25 nIf I could only free my hands,n he thought.26 Then I could get the rope off my neck and jump into the river.27 I could swim under the water and escape the fire of theirguns.28 I could reach the other side of the river and get home through the forest.29 My hous
9、e is outside of their military area, and my wife and children are safe there.30 I would be, too.31 While these thoughts raced through the prisoners mind, the captain gave the soldiers the order to hang him.32 A soldier quickly obeyed. He made the rope firm around the prisoners neck.34 Then he droppe
10、d him through a hole in the bridge.35 As the prisoner fell, everything seemed black and empty.36 But then he felt a sharp pain in his neck and could not breathe.37 There were terrible pains running from his neck down through his body, his arms and his legs.38 He could not think.39 He could only feel
11、, a feeling of living in a world of pain.40 Then, suddenly, he heard a noise.something falling into the water.41 There was a big sound in his ears.42 Everything around him was cold and dark.43 Now he could think.44He believed the rope had broken and that he was in the river. But the rope was still a
12、round his neck, and his hands were tied.46 He thought: How funny.47 How funny to die of hanging at the bottom of a river! Then he felt his body moving up to the top of the water.48 The prisoner did not know what he was doing.49 But his hands reached the rope on his neck and tore it off.50 Now he fel
13、t the most violent pain he had ever known.51 He wanted to put the rope back on his neck.52 He tried but could not53 His hands beat the water and pushed him up to the top.54 His head came out of the water.55 The light of the sun hurt his eyes.56 His mouth opened, and he swallowed air.57It was too muc
14、h for his lungs.He blew out the air with a scream.59 Now the prisoner could think more clearly.60 All his senses had returned.61 They were even sharper than before.62 He heard sounds he never heard before - that no mans ears ever heard - the flying wings of small insects, the movement of a fish.63 H
15、is eyes saw more than just the trees along the river.64 They saw every leaf on the trees.65 And they saw the thin lines in the leaves.66 And he saw the bridge, with the wall at one end.67 He saw the soldiers and the captain on the bridge.68 They shouted, and they pointed at him.69 They looked like g
16、iant monsters.70As he looked, he heard gunfire. Something hit the water near his head. Now there was a second shot.72 He saw one soldier shooting at him.73 He knew he had to get to the forest and escape.74 He heard an officer call to the other soldiers to shoot75 The prisoner went down into the rive
17、r, deep, as far as he could.76 The water made a great noise in his ears, but he heard the shots.77 As he came up to the top again, he saw the bullets hit the water.78 Some of them touched his face and hands.79 One even fell into the top of his shirt He felt the heat of the bullet on his back.80 When
18、 his head came out of the water for air, he saw that he was farther away from the soldiers. And he began swimming strongly.As he swam, the soldiers fired their rifles.82 Then they fired their cannon at him.83 But nothing hit him.84 Then, suddenly, he could not swim.85 He was caught in a whirlpool wh
19、ich kept turning him around and around.86 This was the end, he thought.87 Then, just as suddenly as it had caught him, the whirlpool lifted him and threw him out of the river.88 He was on land!89 He kissed the ground.90 He looked around him.91 There was a pink light in the air.92 The wind seemed to
20、make music as it blew through the trees.93He wanted to stay there. But the cannon fired again, and he heard the bullets above his head.95 He got up and ran into the forest.96 At last, he found a road toward his house.97 It was a wide, straight road.98 Yet it looked like a road that never had any tra
21、velers on it. No farms.99 No houses on its sides, only tall black trees. 100 In the tall black trees, the prisoner heard strange voices.101 Some of them spoke in words that he could not understand. 102 His neck began to hurt. 103 When he touched itz it felt very large.104 His eyes hurt so much that he could not close them.105 His feet moved, but he could not feel the road.106As he walked, he was in a kind of sleep.
