4、3 These women might sound eccentric or even neurotic to some readers, but their reaction is fully understandable to those who have lost someone or something special, says Tsukimi Washizu, a veterinarian and lecturer at Nippon Veterinary and Zootechnical College. In Japan, where extended families are

5、 becoming a thing of the past and people are increasingly choosing to live alone, more people are beginning to keep pets as their companions. Pets give unconditional affection and comfort to humans, but their death can also bring them unbearable grief.4 n Animals become a part of your family. It is

Many people, however, will consider you a little strange if you take even a single day off for your pets funeral, while theyll give you sympathy for a death in your family and allow you to take several days off from work or sch

7、ool.05 Washizu recently compiled a book titled Pet no Shi, Sono Toki Anata wa (The Death of Your Pet - What Next)“ with several other specialists in the field. While many books on how to raisea and train pets have been published, this book is probably the first book on pet loss* aimed at ordinary pe

8、t owners in Japan, she says. The book includes such subjects as the terminal care of pets, how to deal with the remains after the death, and advice on how to cope with the loss of pets.6 The term pet loss came into usage in the late 70s among some veterinarians and psychotherapists in the United Sta

9、tes and Europe. Beyond the physical loss, the term encompasses the pet owners1 psychological stress - such as grief, depression, anger, separation anxiety, guilt, sleeping and eating disorders, fatigue, sickness, transient auditory and visual hallucinations and so on.7 Although pet loss has recently

10、 become a topic in the Japanese mass media, Washizu is skeptical about the coverage. 22、ip of thousands of people. This 56-page publication contains information on store listings, shop ratings, coming events, and news of trends in recycling. People from all sectors of society read nSecond Hand NewsH to learn about whats happening in the secondhand scene. The interest is growing in the

23、use of these shops - some drop off their goods that they no longer want or need, some come to browse and see what its all about, others come to search for that piece of clothing that will make them stand out in a crowd.3 Recycle centers and shops originated through community service organizations su

24、ch as the YMCA, Salvation Army, Good Will and church groups. One such organization, the St. Vincent De Paul in San Diego, got its start in 1948 and is still doing a booming business today. Organizations such as these offer a wide range of goods and products from used household items to baby clothes.

25、 In many urban centers these types of shops cater to the needier segment of the population.4 But as recycling became fashionable during the 1980s, individuals opened secondhand shops geared to the middle and even upper classes of society. Shops like Michaels” in downtown San Diego, Auntie Helens in

26、New York, and Brother Bennies in Los Angeles specialize in vintage clothing and accessories for both men and women. They claim to stock secondhand goods of the finest quality at low prices. nChoosing an evening gown at MichaeFs is almost like shopping at Harrods in London or Barneys in New York, exc

28、cide its really not for you, she explains.5 The recycle craze is not just all happening in the United States, it seems to have taken much of the whole world by storm. Some people in Tokyo, Japan make their living by what they call nThrivingn: Designers hire them to shop for treasures, which then for

James I go to clubs to see what the kids are wearing, then hunt down old fabric, a belt buckle or a cool sweater pattern at a flea market, he explains.HThc designer then invents a new look using the good

Some are fashion wizards, others become famous just by copying thrift items/ says Ashton.6 In London, England, hunting for vintage clothing and jewelry has become the in thing to do. 32、lighted to see her shoe collection. On the rack are a pair of 1970s Charles Jourdan platform shoes with carved wooden chunky heels and braided, yellow patent leather straps. That same chunky look was revived in 1997, a hot item in fashion circles then. Now she says, This pair is just waiting for the

33、 right foot.7 The idea is to take fragments of the past to create an image for yourself. 38、don*t even have a term for spouse loss/ she says.9 Nevertheless, a general awareness is important. Yamazaki points out that very few pet specialists in Japan can properly guide troubled peat owners. In the U.S. and Europe, various forms of pet loss care support are offered. Veterinary hospitals offe

39、r counselling service for the individual or family members to come and talk with staff, who are trained to deal with grief and depression related to pet loss. Telephone counselling has also been set up. * Trained volunteers man the telephone lines for callers twenty-four hours a day in some states i

40、n the U.S., listening to their stories about their pets, and giving them advice on how to deal with death. Self-help groups have also been organized in many cities in the U.S. and Europe. People who have lost their pets meet once a week to share their grief and try to readjust to life without their

41、pets. Books on pet bereavement and condolence cards for people who have lost their pets are also commonly sold. And although not all the people who have lost their pets are using these services, it is at least available. Veterinarian surveys report about 30 percent of pet owners in the U.S. may use

42、these services at one time or another. Pet owners claim that it doesnt matter how many use it, the most important point is that society recognizes the grief caused by the loss of pets.10 Chifumi Yoshida, a Kawasaki-based psychotherapist, is probably the only person in this country who is offering te

43、lephone counselling service for those suffering from pet loss. Since he started the service two years ago, Yoshida has had over 400 callers. Many callers dont need to phone him more than once, because they usually feel somehow relieved after sharing their feelings. Some, he says, seem to be meantall

44、y depressed, though the percentage is very low. nIf you have difficulty leading a normal social life for longer than two or three months, you should consult with a therapist/1 Yoshida says.11 According to Yoshida, many people do tend to humanize their pets, as if they were their children, so the pet

45、s death can impact people like the loss of a child would. Some callers openly say losing their pet caused them more grief than their parents death, he says.12 Often other peoples reactions have a great influence on recovery, Yoshida points out.
