3、ppening to.2)I wanted to feel sorry for him.I really did.I thought he was the saddestperson I had ever met,in those moments when I glimpsed him staring out of thewindow.And as the days went by and I realized that his condition was not just amatter of being stuck in that chair,of the loss of physical

4、 freedom,but anever-ending litany(冗长而枯燥的陈述;)of indignities(侮 辱,轻蔑)and healthproblems,of risks and discomforts,I decided that if I were Will,I wouldprobably be pretty miserable too.3)But oh Lord,he was vile to me.Everything I said,he had a sharp answer for.If I asked him if he was warm enough,he woul

5、d retort(反驳;回嘴)that he wasquite capable of letting me know if he needed another blanket.If I asked if thevacuum cleaner(吸尘器)was too noisy for him-I hadnt wanted to interrupthis film-he asked me why,had I worked out a way to make it run silently?When I fed him,he complained that the food was too hot

6、or too cold,or that Ihad brought the next forkful up to his mouth before he had finished the last.Hehad the ability to twist almost anything I said or did so that I seemed stupid.4)During those first two weeks,I got quite good at keeping my face completelyblank,and I would turn away and disappear in

7、to the other room and just say aslittle to him as I possibly could.I started to hate him,and Im sure he knew it.5)I hadnt realized it was possible to miss my old job more than I already did.Imissed Frank,and the way he actually looked pleased to see me when I arrivedin the morning.I missed the custo

8、mers,their company,and the easy chatter(唠叨,喋喋不休)that swelled and dipped gently like a benign(温和的,仁慈的)sea around me.This house,beautiful and expensive as it was,was as still andsilent as a morgue(停尸房).Six months,I repeated under my breath,when itfelt unbearable.Six months.6)And then on the Thursday,j

9、ust as I was mixing WilTs mid-morning,high-calorie drink,I heard Mrs Traynors voice in the hall.Except this timethere were other voices too.I waited,the fork stilled in my hand.I could justmake out a woman飞 voice,young,well-spoken(谈吐文雅的),and a mans.7)Mrs Traynor appeared in the kitchen doorway,and I
