7、e just received a letter from my brother,Tim.He is in Australia.He hasbeen there for six months.Tim is an engineer.He is working for a big firm and hehas already visited a great number of different places in Australia.He has just boughtan Australian car and has gone to Alice Springs,a small town in
8、the centre of Australia.He will soon visit Darwin.From there,he will fly to Perth.My brother has never been abroad before,so he is finding this trip very exciting.Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无 车 昔 号 之 虞 Mr James Scott has a garage in Sil bury and now he has just bought another garagein Pinhurst.Pinhur
9、st is only five miles from Silbury,but Mr Scott cannot get atelephone for his new garage,so he has just bought twelve pigeons.Yesterday,a pigeoncarried the first message from Pinhurst to Silbury.The bird covered the distancein three minutes.Up to now,Mr Scott has sent a great many requests for spare
10、 partsand other urgent messages from one garage to the other.In this way,he has begunhis own private telephone service.Lesson 6 Percy Buttons 珀 西 巴 顿 斯 I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street.Yesterday a beggar knocked at mydoor.He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer.In return for this,the
11、 beggar stoodon his head and sang songs.I gave him a meal.He ate the food and drank the beer.Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket and went away.Later a neighbour toldme about him.Everybody knows him.Ilis name is Percy Buttons.He calls at every housein the street once a month and always asks f
12、or a meal and a glass of beer.Lesson 7 Too late 为 时 太 晚 The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning.Theywere expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa.A few hours earlier,someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.When thepla
13、ne arrived,some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building whileothers were waiting on the airfield.Two men took the parcel off the plane and carriedit into the Customs House.While two detectives were keeping guard at the door,twoothers opened the parcel.To their surprise,the precious p
14、arcel was full of stonesand sand!Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最 好 的 和 最 差 的 Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town.Nearly everybody entersfor The Nicest Garden Competition,each year,but Joe wins every time.Bill FrithJs garden is larger than Joe s.Bill works harder than Joe and grow
15、s more flowersand vegetables,but Joe s garden is more interesting.He has made neat paths andhas built a wooden bridge over a pool.I like gardens too,but I do not like hardwork.Every year I enter for the garden competition too,and I always win a littleprize for the worst garden in the town!Lesson 9 A
16、 cold welcome 冷 遇 On Wednesday evening,we went to the Town Hall.It was the last day of the yearand a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.It would striketwelve in twenty minutes time.Fifteen minutes passed and then,at five to twelve,the clock stopped.The big minute hand did n
17、ot move.We waited and waited,but nothinghappened.Suddenly someone shouted,It s two minutes past twelve!The clock hasstopped!?I looked at my watch.It was true.The big clock refused to welcome theNew Year.At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for jazz不 适 于 演 奏 爵 士 乐 We have an
18、 old musical instrument.It is called a clavichord(翼 琴).It was madein Germany in 1681.Our clavichord is kept in the living-room.It has belong to ourfamily for a long time.The instrument was bought by my grandfather many years ago.Recently it was damaged by a visitor.She tried to play jazz on it!She s
19、truck thekeys too hard and two of the strings were broken.My father was shocked.Now we arenot allowed to touch it.It is being repaired by a friend of my father s.Lesson 11 One good turn deserves another 礼 尚 往 来 I was having dinner at a restaurant when Harry Steele came in.Harry worked ina lawyer?s o
20、ffice years ago,but he is now working at a bank.He gets a good salary,but he always borrows money from his friends and never pays it back.Harry saw meand came and sat at the same table.He has never borrowed money from me.While hewas eating,I asked him to lend me&2 To my surprise,he gave me the money
21、immediately.I have never borrowed any money from you,Harry said,so now youcan pay for my dinner!JLesson 12 Goodbye and good luck 再 见,一 路 顺 风 Our neighbour,Captain Charles Alison,will sail from Portsmouth tomorrow.Weshall meet him at the harbour early in the morning.He will be in his small boat,Topsa
22、il.Tapsail is a famous little boat.It has sailed across the Atlantic many times.Captain Alison will set out at eight of clock so we shall have plenty of time.Weshall see his boat and then we shall say good-bye to him.He will be away for twomonths.We are very proud of him.He will take part in an impo
23、rtant race across theAtlantic.Lesson 13 The Greenwood Boys 绿 林 少 年 The Greenwood Boys are a group of popular singers.At present,they are visitingall parts of the country.They will be arriving here tomorrow.They will be comingby train and most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at th
24、e station.Tomorrow evening theywill be singing at the Workers Club.The Greenwood Boys will be staying for fivedays.During this time,they will give five performances.As usual,the police willhave a difficult time.They will be trying to keep order.It is always the same onthese occasions.Lesson 14 Do yo
25、u speak English?你 会 讲 英 语 吗?I had an amusing experience last year.After I had left a small village in thesouth of France,I drove on to the next town.On the way,a young man waved to me.I stopped and he asked me for a lift.As soon as he had got into the car,I said goodmorning to him in French and he r
26、eplied in the same language.Apart from a few words,I do not know any French at all.Neither of us spoke during the journey.I had nearlyreached the town,when the young man suddenly said,very slowly,Do you speakEnglish?,As I soon learnt,he was English himself!Lesson 15 Good news 佳 音 The secretary told
27、me that Mr.Harmsworth would see me.1 felt very nervous when.I went into his office.He did not look up from his desk when I entered.After I hadsat down,he said that business was very bad.He told me that the firm could not affordto pay such large salaries.Twenty people had already left.I knew that my
28、turn hadcome.Mr.Harmsworth,J I said in a weak voice.Don,t interrupt,*he Said.Thenhe smiled and told me I would receive an extra&100 a year!Lesson 16 A polite request 彬 彬 有 礼 的 要 求 If you park your car in the wrong place,a traffic policeman will soon find it.You will be very lucky if he lets you go w
29、ithout a ticket.However,this does notalways happen.Traffic police are sometimes very polite.During a hoiiday in Sweden,I found this note on my car:Sir,we welcome you to our city.This is a“No Parking“area.You will enjoy your stay here if you pay attention to our street signs.Thisnote is only a remind
30、er.If you receive a request like this,you cannot fail toobey it!Lesson 17 Always young 青 年 常 驻 My aunt Jennifer is an actress.She must be at least thirty-five years old.Inspite of this,she often appears on the stage as a young girl.Jennifer will haveto take part in a new play soon.This time,she will
