7、and has gone to AliceSprings,a small town in the centre of Australia.He willsoon visit D arwin.From there,he will fly to Perth.My brother has never been abroad before,so he is findingthis trip very exciting.Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无错号之虞Mr James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he hasjust boug
8、ht another garage in Pinhurst.Pinhurst is onlyfive miles from Silbury,but Mr Scott cannot get atelephone for his new garage,so he has just boughttwelve pigeons.Yesterday,a pigeon carried the firstmessage from Pinhurst to Silbury.The bird covered thedistance in three minutes.Up to now,Mr Scott has se
9、nt agreat many requests for spare parts and other urgentmessages from one garage to the other.In this way,hehas begun his own private telephone service.Lesson 6 Percy B uttons 珀西 巴顿斯I have just moved to a house in B ridge Street.Yesterday abeggar knocked at my door.He asked me for a meal anda glass
10、of beer.In return for this,the beggar stood on hishead and sang songs.I gave him a meal.He ate the foodand drank the beer.Then he put a piece of cheese in hispocket and went away.Later a neighbour told me abouthim.Everybody knows him.His name is Percy B uttons.He calls at every house in the street o
11、nce a month andalways asks for a meal and a glass of beer.Lesson 7 Too late 为时太晚The plane was late and detectives were waiting at theairport all morning.They were expecting a valuable parcelof diamond from South Africa.A few hours earlier,someone had told the police that thieves would try tosteal th
12、e diamonds.When the plane arrived,some of thedetectives were waiting inside the main building whileothers were waiting on the airfield.Two men took theparcel off the plane and carried it into the C ustoms House.While two detectives were keeping guard at the door,twoothers opened the parcel.To their
13、surprise,the preciousparcel was full of stones and sand!Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最好的和最差的Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town.Nearly everybody enters for The Nicest G ardenC ompetition1 each year,but Joe wins every time.B illFriths garden is larger than Joes.B ill works harder
14、 thanJoe and grows more flowers and vegetables,but Joesgarden is more interesting.He has made neat paths andhas built a wooden bridge over a pool.I like gardens too,but I do not like hard work.Every year I enter for thegarden competition too,and I always win a little prize forthe worst garden in the
15、 town!Lesson 9 A cold welcome 冷遇On Wednesday evening,we went to the Town Hall.It wasthe last day of the year and a large crowd of people hadgathered under the Town Hall clock.It would strike twelvein twenty minutes time.Fifteen minutes passed and then,at five to twelve,the clock stopped.The big minu
16、te handdid not move.We waited and waited,but nothinghappened.Suddenly someone shouted,Its two minutespast twelve!The clock has stopped!1 I looked at my watch.It was true.The big clock refused to welcome the NewYear.At that moment everybody began to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for ja zz不适于演奏爵士乐We ha
17、ve an old musical instrument.It is called aclavichord(翼琴).It was made in G ermany in 1681.Ourclavichord is kept in the living-room.It has belong to ourfamily for a long time.The instrument was bought by mygrandfather many years ago.Recently it was damaged bya visitor.She tried to play jazz on it!She
18、 struck the keystoo hard and two of the strings were broken.My fatherwas shocked.Now we are not allowed to touch it.It isbeing repaired by a friend of my fathers.Lesson 11 One good turn deserves another 礼尚往来I was having dinner at a restaurant when Harry Steelecame in.Harry worked in a lawyers office
19、 years ago,buthe is now working at a bank.He gets a good salary,buthe always borrows money from his friends and never paysit back.Harry saw me and came and sat at the sametable.He has never borrowed money from me.While hewas eating,I asked him to lend me&2,To my surprise,he gave me the money immedia
20、tely.have neverborrowed any money from you,1 Harry said,so now youcan pay for my dinner!1Lesson 12 G oodbye and good luck 再见,一路顺风Our neighbour,C aptain C harles Alison,will sail fromPortsmouth tomorrow.We shall meet him at the harbourearly in the morning.He will be in his small boat,Topsail.Tapsail

22、oss the Atlantic.Lesson 13 The G reenwood B oys 绿林少年The G reenwood B oys are a group of popular singers.Atpresent,they are visiting all parts of the country.They w川be arriving here tomorrow.They will be coming by trainand most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at the station.Tomorr
