30、ation for the point that theres a lot more to life than a job.Itis of a problem-solution pattern which can be roughly divided into three parts.Part One consists of Para.1 to Para.8,presenting the problem.Para.1 is a very generalstatement that the saddest thing about youth is that it is wasted on the
31、 young.This isan old conviction which serves as a lead-in to develop the discourse in the way howyouth is wasted on the young today.From Para.2 to Para.4,we can find a surveyconducted to find out what the youth today are thinking about.The survey report onfirst-year college students shows that thing
32、s of material value are of great importanceto young people.Todays college beginners are“more consumeristic and lessidealistic than before.From Para.5 to Para.8,the writer provides facts to support theargument that the students today are more materialistic,from what they choose tolearn in college to
33、what they prefer for work.Finally in Para.s 7 and 8,the writerpresents another examples if a“successful“student as being a sales representative.Sofrom Para.1 to Para.8,the writer builds up a problem with our youth today that theyare becoming more and more inclined to care more about material things
34、rather thananything else like social responsibility.Part Two is made up of 10 paragraphs,from Para.9 to Para.18.This part is about howto deal with the problem presented from the previous 8 paragraphs.From paras.9 to13,the writer builds up his argument that it is the duty of educational institutions
35、tohelp students understand the meaning of life,In this part the writer argues that it isnow more important than ever to help our students realize what is truly important inlife.And people can understand the meaning of life when they reach middle age.However,it is the duty of educational institutions
36、 to help students understand themeaning of life before they reach middle age.If we cannot,the whole system ofeducation is to be challenged.From paras 14 to 18,the writer continues to argue aboutwhat education should do for us.Para.14 puts forward the argument that educationshould teach us to see the
37、 connections between things,as well as to see beyond ourimmediate needs.Para 15 is a fact to show if people fail to find the connectionbetween things or see beyond their immediate needs,what the results will be-justlike a strike for higher salary ending with the loss of jobs.Para.16 is another fact
38、toshow that in the money-making world,people are expected to tell right from wrong.Para.17 is an example of a person who is successful both in his life and in his career.Education can do both.In para.18 the writer quotes from Oscar Wilde,“we ought togive our ability to our work but our genius to our
39、 livers”.That brings out an idealmodel for education,being successful in both social life and ones own life career.Part Three is the last paragraph.Paragraph 19 concludes the essay by stating that oureducators should answer students9 cries for career education and ensure that studentshave the educat
40、ion that they will wish fbr later in life.IV.Structured WritingA Paragraph of an Argument Supported by FactsOne writing technique for an argumentation is to support an argument with facts,statistics,examples,reasons,etc.In this text we can find that facts are used to support anargument.Take paragrap
41、hs 14&15 fbr an example.In Paragraph 14 we have the argument:Education should teach us to see theconnections between things,as well as to see beyond our immediate needs.To supportthe argument the writer gives one fact in Paragraph 15:a strike fbr higher wages only todrive the employers out of jobs.V
