Lead-in and preparation for readingShow some pictures and let them talk to each other about the following questions:1. How time is treated in C
5、hina? What is the difference with that in the USA?2. What is culture shock?3. How do Americans view time?Step 3. Fast readingAsk the Students to read the passage as quickly as they can and then answer the questions on the screen. Let them get the main idea of each paragraph and make clear about the
6、text structure.Text structure: ( structured writing ) The passage can be divided into 3 parts.Part I (para 1) Americans save time carefully.Part II (paras 2-7) Americans, attitude towards time and how they try to save time in daily life and in business.Part III(para 8) It is taken as a sign of skill

During the reading, there is an explanation for the following points:Language Points:1. Americans believe no one stands still. (P
13、ara. 1)Meaning: Americans believe no one keeps motionless; everyone moves.Here stand means keep or stay in a particular position or stateH. In this sense, stand is followed by adjectives. More examples:The room stands idle,这房间闲置着。2. We are slaves to nothing but the clock, . (Para. 2)1Meaning: We are
14、 under the control of time only and nothing else, or we are only dominated by time.3. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. (Para. 2) Meaning: Many people have a very strong feeling that life is short.Notice the use of sense in the following examples:a sense of hum
15、or/duty/direction 幽默感责任感/方向感4. We want every minute to count. (Para. 2)Meaning: We want every minute to be put into good use (since it is precious).5. They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. (Para. 4)Meaning
