3、 am one of those female bodies poorly displayed in bathing suits. Cold-water swimming deepened my sense of well-being and let me use my body. It became a ritual Barbara and I embraced as swimming sisters. When she returned to the United States immediately after our Canadian Thanksgiving, I did not k
4、now how I could continue our cold-water tradition. I wasnt prepared to freeze alone. But, I had to swim; there were larger commitments I could not dismiss (摒弃). In the summer, we planned to cross from the cove to an island across the lake. I had to stay fit. We also planned to host a cold-water swim
5、ming race for locals in the fall. We would make it an annual event, enhancing our strength and endurance (耐力) so that, in our 80s, we might swim through October and into November. With these plans in mind, I joined my local city pool. I had not been in a public pool for about 30 years. But my body s
6、aid swim, my brain said swim and my heart, could not let go. So I went anyway. I am swimming. I am alive to my love of the water, alive to my promise for the spring and the summer that will come. She became curious about all the icons (图标), so we set up a weekly tutorial (辅导课), which takes place over the phone, each of us with our iPads. One day, I struggled for 45 minutes to help her find the search bar. “It looks like a magnify
14、ing glass (放大镜),” I kept saying. Finally, she asked: “You mean the frying pan?” We speak on the phone every day. We also FaceTime, Zoom and email. She powers through e-books, marveling that she can check them out in the middle of the night. She watches TV series and knows whats trending. But she has
15、 not yet successfully surfed the Net. She would like to read the newspaper, but pop-up ads (自动弹出式广告) and sidebars are problematic. She “accidentally” touches them, and then ends up on some strange pages. I cant wait for the day when we can sit down in person and surf the Net together. In the meantim

As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his f
21、ather used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “hi.” Seconds later the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldnt. His love for
22、 this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears conveyed how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to convey. Although they were strangers to me, I am honored to have shared in this precious celebration of
23、accomplishment in that boys young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing (外出游玩). This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will b
