Unfortunately, it was my senior year, and I still hadnt been nominated.“Ew, why is Kayla on here?” I asked, my face scrunched up like Id just tasted prune juice.Dads response to my question

4、was perfectly legitimate: “Why are you looking at a private list that doesnt belong to you?”He had me there. I grumbled something about the list being out in the open where anyone could see it, and then sat down to start my calculus homework. After a minute, Dad seemed to take pity on me.“Skyline is

5、nt just for academically gifted students, you know. Its also a place for people to clear their heads and sort out the issues in their lives. There are lots of reasons students get selected besides good grades.”I grunted and kept working. I already knew grades alone didnt get one into Skyline. If the

6、y did, my 4.0 GPA wouldve earned me a nomination years ago.“Its an amazing experience,” Dad added wistfully. As a staff member, hed attended the camp numerous times. “Michael was lucky enough to go. I always hoped you would be, too.”That makes two of us, I thought. But, apparently, once again, I had

7、nt made the cut. I probably wouldnt have felt so bad if I hadnt seen Kaylas name on the list.Id known Kayla for almost four years. We took many of the same honors-level classes. Aside from being smart, Kayla was also pretty. Her mixed racial background gave her long, dark curls and smooth, mocha-col

8、ored skin. She definitely wasnt hurting for friends, either. A loud crowd of laughing groupies seemed to follow her no matter where she was headed, whether it was the cafeteria or the bathroom.Being intelligent, beautiful, and popular wouldve been enough for most people, but not Kayla. She had to be

9、 one more thing on top of it all: The. Meanest. Girl. On. The. Planet.She always seemed to be making fun of my friends and me what we were wearing, how we talked, what “dumb” expressions we happened to have on our faces at any given moment.Her cruelty wasnt limited to my social group, either or even

10、 the human species. One time, during German class, a bird smashed into the window and died. While everyone else stood there horrified, Kayla started laughing because the bird “looked stupid when it hit the glass.”Thats just who she was.Or so I thought.About a month after spotting the Skyline list, I

11、 was once again working in my dads classroom after school when Kayla walked in unexpectedly. Quickly, I ducked my head, hoping she wouldnt say something mean. Thankfully, she ignored me and headed for the phone in the corner. I wondered if she had permission to use it, but wasnt about to draw her at

12、tention (or wrath) by asking.As I sat by the stinky turtle tank, outlining my AP English paper, Kayla made her call. Im not sure what it was about. I was honestly trying my hardest not to eavesdrop.But blocking out the conversation became impossible when the woman on the other end of the line starte

13、d screaming at Kayla so loudly that I could hear every syllable.Kayla tried to reason with her, but the screaming continued. Mean words. Nasty words. Words Kayla herself had said many times about my friends and me.Stupid. Dumb. Idiot. Loser.I tried to make myself deaf and invisible at the same time.

14、 When the call finally ended, Kayla rushed from the room without looking in my direction. Her cheeks were red, but I dont think she was crying. I wouldve been.While I attempted to go back to work on my English paper, the phone call haunted me. I kept wondering if the screaming woman was Kaylas mothe

15、r. My own mother never wouldve said those words to me, no matter how badly I screwed up. I felt something I never thought Id feel for my archenemy pity.Quickly, I shook away the thought. No. This was Kayla. The Mean Girl. After all the snide comments and haughty looks shed thrown my way, she didnt d

16、eserve any emotion except contempt.A few weeks went by and Id mostly forgotten about the phone call. I was walking to lunch one afternoon when I spotted a spiral notebook lying in the hallway. There was no name on the cover, so I decided to take it to the office.Id only walked a few feet when a piec

17、e of paper slipped out and swooped to the floor. The page had a short paragraph typed on it, and a single name jumped out at me from the text: Kayla.I knew I had no right to read it, but Kaylas latest disparaging remark was still fresh in my mind. Apparently, only “hicks” wore overalls. Well, maybe

18、“hicks” also read papers that were carelessly left out in the hallway for anyone to find.Smirking, I began to read.In just a few short words, Kayla described how she felt about being of mixed racial heritage. She was black when she was with her black friends and white when she was with her white fri

19、ends, but she never really fit with either group. I was shocked to learn that her skin color, which I had always seen as beautiful, was actually a source of isolation, confusion and low self-esteem for her.Carefully, I slipped the paper back into the notebook.I didnt know what to do with the informa

20、tion Id just learned. Kayla, the girl who never went anywhere without an entire posse, felt alone in a way I could never possibly understand.As I walked down the hallway, Dads words about Camp Skyline came back: “Its a place for people to clear their heads, sort out the issues in their lives.”For th

21、e first time, I realized what he meant. Skyline wasnt a prize to be won. It was a haven for kids who needed help. Kids who were confused or sad. Kids whose mom screamed nasty words at them. 22、t selected. Maybe it would heal the wounds those nasty words had left on her. Maybe shed finally find a place she truly belonged.As high school drew to a close, Kayla and I werent exactly friends, but she did start being a little nicer, and I stopped calling her my archenemy. 23、t even think of her as “The Mean Girl” anymore. I think of her as the girl who taught me one of the greatest lessons of my life: Its easy to judge other people.
