2、bjects.During the Hellenistic period,it evoked the pleasures of the countryside and represented scenes of shepherds,herds,rustic temples,rural mountainous landscapes and country houses.Erotic scenes are also relatively common.In the late empire,after 200AD,early Christian themes mixed with pagan ima

3、gery survive on catacomb walls.The painting of the ancient Greece was much influenced by that of the Minoan age.Fragments of wall paintings have been found in or around the palaces(Pylos,Mycenae,Tiryns)and in domestic contexts(Zygouries).The largest complete wall painting depicting three female figu

4、res,probably goddesses,was found in the so-called Cult Centre at Mycenae.Various themes are represented:hunting,bull leaping,battle scenes,processions,etc.Some scenes may be part of mythological narratives,but if so their meaning eludes us.CHUNQIU AND ZHANGUO It is typical of the developed Shang sty

5、le that all available space is decorated,most often with stylized forms of real and imaginary animals.The most common motif is thetaotie,which shows a mythological being presented frontally as though squashed onto a horizontal plane to form a symmetrical design.The early significance oftaotieis not

6、clear,but myths about it existed around the lateZhou Dynasty.It was considered to be variously a covetous man banished to guard a corner of heaven against evil monsters;or a monster equipped with only a head which tries to devour men but hurts only itself.The function and appearance of bronzes chang

7、ed gradually from the Shang to the Zhou.They shifted from been used in religious rites to more practical purposes.By theWarring States period,bronze vessels had become objects of aesthetic enjoyment.Some were decorated with social scenes,such as from a banquet or hunt;whilst others displayed abstrac

9、 14th through the middle of the 17th centuries.Early Renaissance,mostly in Italy,bridges the art period during the fifteenth century,between the Middle Ages and the High Renaissance in Italy.It is generally known that Renaissance matured in Northern Europe later,in 16th century.One of the distinguis

10、hing features of Renaissance art was its development of highly realistic linear perspective.The development of perspective was part of a wider trend towards realism in the arts.To that end,painters also developed other techniques,studying light,shadow,and,famously in the case ofLeonardo da Vinci,hum

11、an anatomy.Underlying these changes in artistic method,was a renewed desire to depict the beauty of nature,and to unravel the axioms ofaesthetics,with the works of Leonardo,MichelangeloandRaphaelrepresenting artistic pinnacles that were to be much imitated by other artistsMING DYNASTYDuring theMing

12、dynasty(13681644),Chinese painting developed greatly from the achievements in painted art during the earlierSong dynastyandYuan dynasty.The painting techniques which were invented and developed before the Ming period became classical during this period.More colours were used in painting during the M

13、ing dynasty.Seal brownbecame much more widely used,and even over-used during this period.Many new painting skills/techniques were innovated and developed,calligraphywas much more closely and perfectly combined with the art of painting.Chinese painting reached another climax in the mid and late Ming.
