、Hello everyone,my name is Wang Chao.Im from the PrintmakingDepartment of China Academy of Art.Today I will talk about The Application of Traditional Chinese WoodblockPrinting Materials. This lesson is divided into three parts.Part 1:The goal of this lessonPart 2:Preparation of materialsPart 3:The pre
、sentation of different materials on the paper“The transfer of an object on paper through a medium”is the simplest explanation of“printmaking”.There are many materials available, such as wood, stone, and even metal.Since wood is relatively cheap and easy to buy,it is used extensively in printmaking.Beca
、use the fiber structure of wood surface is relatively single,so in addition to engraving on the wood surface,a more complex,or say more interesting kind of marks can be produced bythe abrasion of wood and paper. This is what I am going to talk about today. For example, the surface of this piece of wood
、 is flat. After processing and adding a material on top, there will be a second kind of“texture”,making the wood surface more diverse. After transfer,a special mark will be made on the paper. This is also what we want to achieve in this lesson.Next Ill explain it step by stepAs you can see,on this table
、 is the finished plate with“texture”on it.This is a leaf.This is a shape made of twine.And this is a ginkgo leaf.The plate is complicated,with leaves,plant skin and plastic,and even aluminum foil,which is metal.This one uses leaves to form a figurative figure,a shrimp.After the transfer,it appears i
、n various colors, and can also be printed with ink. This one is more interesting. The plate is pasted with plastic material, which can also be used for printing. In here, the rope marks can make ink stuck.Because the rope absorbs water,so it can cause bleeding on the paper. But in here,it is relatively“dry
、”.The two are very different.Ginkgo leaves should be processed by“ochre color”printing.Ochre is a mineral pigment,so the printed image is“dry”,and the image transferring traces are clear and real, and its color is quite close to ginkgo leaves. Now youve seen these“texture”plates.Next,I will show you h
、ow to make them.First, let me introduce to you the materials and tools to make the“texture”plates. Some materials are“hydrophilic”and can absorb water, while others cannot.Materials that absorb water are mostly plant-based,like this one, bamboo bark, and this piece of bark, wood bark, and hemp rope. These t
、wo pieces are industrial products, plastic net and plastic film.Among all these materials,I choose wood bark and leavesto demonstrate how to make a“texture”plate. The tools I use to make a“texture”plate for watermark print include scissorand knife.Cut out a shape you want. This is a leaf-like shapecut
、out of hydrophilic wood and bamboo bark.We need to apply“glue”,as a medium, evenly on the back of the shape, and paste it on the desired position. Some materials will curl when they encounter moisture. So we should press them on a flat object for 1 to 2 hours. This is a finished“texture”plate with two di
、fferent materials. Now I will show you how to print it.We need to prepare brushes,Chinese painting paints(water-based),water,an ink dish and a small bowl for mixing colors.Tools used for printing include a spray bottle,Chinese painting paints, ink, and watercolor. The paper I use is Chinese Xuan paper.I
、 choose a thicker type,called“Jiaxuan”(multi-tiered Xuan paper). We also need a Japanese printmaking tool called Malian, and a traditional Chinese printmaking tool called Pazi. For these three printing tools, the way of applying force and printinggestures are different, and the marks they produce are als
、o different. Now Ill show you how to do it.I will start with a simple demonstrationof how to make the material looks dry, wet, thick, and light on paper.I use Japanese Malian to print blue color on it.The outside of Malian is wrapped in bamboo skin, with a layer of rough fibers.By rubbing these vertical
、fibers against the paper, images can thereby be transferred. What does the image transferred by this tool look like?As you can see,the wood grain on the“texture”plate is clearly transferredon the paper.Wood carving knife can never make such kind of shape.Using this method,we can transfer very subtle m
、aterial grains onto paper. This is what we call the“dry”printing method. Now,Ill show you the“wet”printing method.Wet the paper with a spray bottle. After spraying water on it,the Xuan paper will become transparent. It will be ready for use when reaching 50%transparency.Now lets compare it with the“dry”
、printing method. The result is totally different. It has something to do with your idea and the image effect,so you need to make your own choice. You will get the answer after practice. In the future, when you need a particular“texture”to appear in a certainimage, you will immediately make the choice. All the good results rely on large amounts of practice.
