1、1Statement of PurposeAs a child growing up in Yanliang,a small town colloquially known as the Seattle of Chinafor its renowned aircraft industry,I always remained in close contact with airplanes.Inadmiration and respect of those engineers who design and manufacture the aircraft,Igradually found myse
2、lf aspiring to be one of them in the future.And this is why I chose tostudy Mechanical Engineering at Xian Jiaotong University.With great curiosity and enthusiasm into this field,I have earned a GPA of 3.90 out of 4.3and am ranked fifth in the Mechanical Engineering Department in the past three year
3、s.Inaddition,I am also a China National Scholarship recipient,an honor bestowed solely tostudents within the top 2%in the country.Through three years learning,I have markedlyincreased my knowledge and improved my technical skills in this area.However,I am awarethat my knowledge and experience remain
4、 limited and therefore I must continue learning.Ibelieve studying in the Mechanical Engineering MEng Program at UC Berkeley will be mybest choice for the next destination on my academic journey,where I will be provided with agreat platform to achieve my career goal of becoming an outstanding mechani
5、cal engineer.Over the past three years,in addition to putting great effort in coursework,I also participatedin severalresearchprojectsincluding the obstacle avoidancethree-wheelerdesigncompetition that I joined with two classmates in my junior year.We were tasked withdesigning a three-wheeler which
6、was capable of avoiding obstacles along the trajectory anddrove solely based on fixed gravitational potential energy.To simplify the calculation,wechose the sinusoidal curve as the trajectory.The most important thing was identifying how tobetter control the three-wheeler to follow the specified traj
7、ectory.After discussing with ouradvisor,I decided to use the cam mechanism and tangent mechanism so that the pattern ofmotion could be controlled by designing the appropriate cam profile.We utilized MATLABto simulate the cam profile according to the steering angle and curvature radius of selectedpoi
8、nts along the trajectory.Then,based on the simulation result,we manufactured andassembled the three-wheeler.However,we found that it could barely move except with theaid of external force.After making various attempts such as applying lubricant to the camand adjusting the initial position of the thr
9、ee-wheeler,I speculated that the problem mighthave to do with the moment of force.Thereafter,I employed tapes to wind the shaft andincrease its radius,which also increased the moment of force provided by the hanging weight.Eventually,we finally started up the three-wheeler and it could avoid up to 1
10、0 obstacles byfollowing the designed trajectory.During this process,I applied what I had learned in class toreal-life problems and improved my skills in creating 3D construction models by SolidWorksas well as programming for simulation in MATLAB.More importantly,I figured out how tocomplete an indus
11、trial project and what to do in different phases as a team leader,which Ibelieve would certainly aid me in my future work.With my experiences in utilizing what I have learned in practice,my ambitions drove me tofurther explore the unknown.During the winter of my junior year,I worked as an intern inC
12、hinas COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute.Under the supervision of2Guanghui Wu,an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering,I participated in thethermal/acoustic insulation cotton structure design group.As an intern,I visited the finalassembly site for C919 and conducted thorou
13、gh literature review on thermal/acousticinsulation flame propagation test method details,focusing on the Federal AviationAdministrations airworthiness clause.I also collaborated with engineering teams to optimizetest methods of thermal/acoustic insulation cotton used for ARJ-21 and C919.This studyla
14、ter led to more comprehensive test methods to improve the accuracy of experimental data.Through this internship,I gained work experience of dealing with engineering problems andgreatly enhanced my comprehension of working in the industrial field as an engineer.Next,in the summer,in order to prepare
15、myself for graduate study in US,I worked inProfessor Zhou and Professor Grays group at Purdue University Northwest on a researchproject aimed at developing a visualization tool for industrial purposes.We sought toimprove the processed roll stand products observation quality to allow factory inspecto
16、rs toidentify product flaws.Initially,I conducted research and compared different approaches tofulfilling the three-dimensional presentation in MATLAB.Then,I decided to explore thepossibility of observation with an app called 3D World Editor due to the simplicity and clearuser interface.After collec
17、ting the data from steel industries,I developed a program toachieve the format conversion accessible in MATLAB.Through utilizing 3D World Editor,Isuccessfully constructed the model and could roughly observe the product.Currently,I amstill continuing the project in order to determine whether it is po
18、ssible to leverage the abilityof SolidWorks or ParaView to improve the observation quality.Through this research workexperience,I have discovered that it is of great benefit to many exciting growth areas bycombining computer programming and interdisciplinary knowledge as well as skills withtradition
19、al mechanical engineering.This Mechanical Engineering MEng program at UCBerkeley synthesizes knowledge and skills across diverse disciplines,which I believe will bethe best choice for continuing my graduate study and achieving my career goals.Besides,thisresearch work experience also consolidated my
20、 ability of conducting research projects andgave me the opportunity to perceive the atmosphere of American college campus life,whichgreatly strengthened my determination of pursing a masters degree abroad.Over the past three years,all my academic experiences have influenced me significantly.They ins
21、pire me to stay hungry as well as stay foolish in this academic journey and drive meto constantly challenge myself.As an old Chinese saying goes,“Every profession has itsmaster.”I aspire to work in the industry field as an mechanical engineer after graduationfrom this program and devote myself to be
22、coming an excellent engineer in the future.UCBerkeley has a beautiful campus and cultivates numerous outstanding engineers in all walksof life.I believe I will thrive learning from world-renowned professors and sharing ideas withbrilliant students there.The MEng program not only provides diverse and
23、 specifiedengineering coursework together with classes in leadership as well as core managementconcepts,but also has a strong and solid network with its alumni and the industry,both ofwhich will prepare me to succeed in my professional career.And this is why I hope to studyin a Mechanical Engineering MEng Program at UC Berkeley.I will be proud to be admittedto UC Berkeley,and one day I believe UC Berkeley will be proud to have me.
