14、 Contents1. ClassificationTo classify is to gather into types, kinds, or categories according to a single basis of division. We classify things according to their similarities and difference. If we classify rivers, we separate them into wide ones, narrow ones, long ones, short ones, deep ones, and s

15、hallow ones. Population can be classified in more than one way. One way is by age groupthe number of people under eighteen, between eighteen and fifty-five, and over fifty-five. Other ways of dividing population are by geographic location, occupation, family size, level of education, and so on.2. Ab

One way is to examine one thing thoroughly and then examine the other. This method is called block (or item-by-item) comparison or block (or item-by

21、-item) contrast. Using the method, the aspects examined in the two things should be identical and in the same order. The other way is to examine two things at the same time, discussing them point by point. This method is called alternating (or point-by-point) comparison or alternating (or point-by-p

22、oint) contrast. Use either one of these two patterns when writing a contrast or a comparison paragraph:1.
