11、TRODUCTIONNowadays,with the rapid development of economy and society,China isopening up to the outside world.Many excellent foreign films and television worksappear in peoples vision.Among them,English films and TV series account for alarge proportion.Moreover,due to its unique language atmosphere a
12、nd culturalbackground,as well as the demand of English learning,the audience keeps increasing,and English films and TV series have become an inalienable part of entertainment indaily life.When people watch movies and TV series,they will find a variety ofsubtitle translation,with varied production gr
13、oups and websites.Their subtitling andtranslation of all kinds of film and television works vary greatly.The phenomenon ofclosing down,re-recruiting and re-reviewing of major subtitle groups later shows theimportance of subtitles,which play a key role in maximization of conveying semanticinformation
14、 to satisfy the audiences entertainment and delight,and to feel the needsof foreign cultures.The Transitivity system is an important framework of translation,not onlyin its actual process but also in terms of later analysis that can help keep track ofinter-cultural linguistic mutations.For example,T
15、aufik Nur(2018)in his paper pointsout how the translation of Obamas and Trumps speeches entailedmajorprocess-shifts in the verbal groups of the source texts.This can also be significant inunderstanding how foreign languages are interpreted and consumed in domesticcircumstances.Rusdi et.al.(2019)have
16、 similarly taken student translations ofIndonesian History texts to conclude the predominance of 6 types of processes and 8types of circumstances in the translations,notwithstanding the transitivity elements inthe source texts.My paper will attempt to undertake a similar study regarding theTransitiv
17、ity system and the analysis of English-Chinese subtitles in terms oftransitivity processes.I will attempt to show that the Transitivity system is efficientand functional in undertaking such an analysis given its linguistically exhaustive辽宁对外经贸学院毕业论文7nature.(Modify in accordance with the conclusion).
18、In the first part,I will take a preliminary look at some foreign and domesticresearch that has been undertaken recently in regard to the Systemic FunctionalGrammar in general and Transitivity in particular.I will then highlight my own aimfor this paper.In the second part,I will explain in detail wha
19、t exactly the SystemicFunctional Grammar and Transitivity are,respectively.This will set the groundworkfor my ultimate analysis of translated subtitles in part three.Part three will specificallyfocus on the English-Chinese subtitles of the TV shows“Sherlock Holmes”and“TheGood Doctor”,while highlight

22、,films and TV series from different cities have been introduced into China,which has influenced generations of people,especially Japanese cartoons andAmerican blockbusters.The success of these films and television works is inseparablefrom their proper and accurate translation.Film and television tra
23、nslation involvesdubbing and subtitle translation.Since this paper is concerned purely with language,the focus will be on subtitle translation.Subtitle translation is different from technical and literary translation.Scientific and technological translation has its own translation mode for the accur
24、acyof terminology expression.Although subtitling is subordinate to drama translation,itis very different.Subtitling is more colloquial and refined,especially in the control ofword count and rhythm.Halliday,a British linguist,established systemic-functional grammar.Functional grammar is an important
25、part of it.It explains that language is a tool forsocial interaction.In an Introduction to Functional Grammar,Halliday pointed outthat the purpose of functional grammar is for discourse analysis.Transitivity is ameta-function of language in this system,which is further categorized into sixprocesses,
26、which are contingent on the“kind”of act that a verb refers to.We willcome back to this later in the paper.For now,I will give the reader a brief glimpse ofwhat has been happening in the field.1.1 Previous Research AbroadTranslation,particularly in the context of film subtitles has largely been辽宁对外经贸
27、学院毕业论文9neglected in academic studies.However,there is still a large amount of research thathas globally been undertaken,especially in the most recent years.Research spanningthe impact of subtitle translation,proper linguistic frameworks of translations andanalysis,and the socio-cultural factors driv
28、ing translation studies has been carried outboth internationally and in domestic academic circles.In a particularly interestingstudy,Omid Jafari(2013)compared metaphors in Film dialogues with theirtranslations in Persian to track the strategies developed by translators to deal withmetaphors.To study
29、 the impact of English-subtitled films,J.Biruls-Muntan et.al.(2016)studied the potential learning effects derived from watching subtitled media.Jorge Diaz-Cintas in his paper in The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies,concluded that the availability of subtitled films has to do with some econo
30、mic factorsregulating the market.Similarly,Valentina Shiryaeva and Georgiana Lungu Badea(2014)traced the particularities of culture-specific words in specific subtitletranslations.Regardless to say,a considerable amount of research has been carried outin the field although the field in general is st
31、ill more or less academicallymarginalized.1.2 Previous Research at HomeAt home in China,similar developments have been taking place.Withrespect to the import of foreign media,academic interest in subtitle translations hastaken a serious turn.For instance,MA Ying in a 2017 paper studied the subtitlet
32、ranslatios in The Vampire Diaries from the perspective of Skopos framework.Another paper published in the International Journal of Language and Linguistics byLi Xinya studied the subtitle translation in The Shawshank Redemption from theperspective of the Relevance theory.Similarly,a lot of studies h
33、ave been carried outwithin embed of the transitivity framework regarding subtitle translation and othertranslator exercises.For instance,Yang Liu and Wanxin jia,in a 2020 paper,undertook a critical study of identity construction in the Chinese News Media usingthe Transitivity perspective.One of the
34、fundamental points of their study was the factthat language plays a vital role in public speech community and the constitution ofcultural identity.Similarly,Kan Chen and Hongyin Tao,in their 2014 paper,studied辽宁对外经贸学院毕业论文10the rise of high transitivity marker dao in contemporary Chinese.They conclud
35、ed thatthis emergence was associated with a number of factors,like the rise of consumerismin China.In particular,Transitivity has gained as much of an audience at home as ithas abroad,with Chinese scholars producing extensive research using Hallidaysoriginal model and other successive models like th
36、e Cardiff model of Transitivity.1.3 Research of this PaperA lot of research has also been produced in regard to translation studies.However,this paper will focus on the Transitivity model,which can provide a veryuseful framework of studying mutations in language affected through culturaltransmission
37、s.Transitivity can be used to make sure also that the translations areproper and no critical,meaning-subverting changes have been affected in the processof translating from the source text to the target text.My objective in this paper issimilar.The focus of this paper is translation,specifically the
38、 translation of subtitlesfrom English to Chinese.I will undertake a study of subtitle translation through thetransitivity model and attempt to ascertain the accuracy of the translation and whetherthe Transitivity model is a proper framework of analysis to undertake such an analysis.Enroot to this fi
39、nal argument,I will also explore the different insights that such aframework can bring to the fore particularly insights into the social fabric of Chinathat become visible through a translated exercise.I will also argue that the two TVshows in consideration make heavy use of material and relational

42、and summarizing the framework well be using throughout the courseof this study.Starting with a brief description of Systemic Functional Linguistic,this chapter will underline the concept,structure and functions of the transitivityframework.2.1 The Concept of TransitivityTransitivity isameta-function
43、oflanguageinSystemic functionallinguistics.SFL advocates the study of meaning rather than form as the center oflanguage.Systemic-functional linguistics posits that language originates from humansocial activities.In communication,it undertakes a variety of functions.Hallidaybelieves especially emphas
44、izes that language is intimately related to and influencedby typical social situations.Halliday further developed linguistic environmenttheory,studied language from the perspective of sociology,and put forward the socialsemiotics in linguistics.Then Halliday redefined the concept and meaning ofsyste
45、m.Halliday sees language as a meaningful system.At the same time,he alsoneeds to pay attention to the outer layer of language,namely,the context.And form isassociated with the system,with meaning.Each system is a set of alternativepossibilities in linguistic behavior,that is,a set of linguistic form
