Demand for memory chips has been hot, lifted by new smartphone launches, 5G ex- pansion and demand for PCs and se
35、rvers. Samsung Electron- ics Co., the worlds largest memory-chip maker, last month said roaring demand helped off- set weakness in smartphone shipments. In a reflection of the demand, flash-memory prices have shot up in recent months. That has helped Kioxias valuation since it backed away quire the
36、blessing of the Japa- nese government, given Kioxias significance there and the polit- ical sensitivities of transferring ownership of such key technol- ogy. Washington would also likely play a role, but a deal could fit with a push by the U.S. to boost its chip-making capa- bilities and increase co
37、mpeti- tiveness with China. Perhaps the biggest regula- tory hurdle would be China, which has been increasingly ag- gressive in its antitrust enforce- ment, helping scuttle potential deals including Qualcomm Inc.s proposed $44 billion purchase of Dutch chip maker NXP Semi- conductors NV in 2018.
