3、 which is suitable for use in his/her Rsum; learn how to cope with the stress of job hunting and the inevitable rejections; assess yourself on seven essential job skills and discuss your score with your student partner.,At the end of your degree course, you look forward to graduating. After three or

4、 four years of effort, you will enter “the world of work”, start earning a salary , and become young adults. The effort of your university study is nothing compared with the stress of applying for and being appointed to a position in your chosen industry!,UNIT ONE,Applying for a Corporate Job,The su

5、bject that you are majoring in will have a big impact on the industry you can choose. It may be IT, engineering, telecoms, education, inter national trade or the media. Graduates in English have a wider range of target industries , especially in foreign companies, where most communications, includin

6、g job interviews, are in English. This situation applies even if the foreign company is based in a country where the native language is not English, e.g. Germany.,UNIT ONE,Applying for a Corporate Job,Once you have prepared your basic CV or Rsum and been advised that you are accepted for an intervie

7、w, you can do a lot to prepare by practicing the answers to 3 questions: “Tell me about yourself.” “What do you know about our company?” “Where do you expect to be in 5 years time?”,UNIT ONE,Applying for a Corporate Job,Certainly, there will be many other questions during your job interview, but the

8、 three above (or versions of them) will almost certainly be asked. To learn how to answer these three questions well, first, read examples in this book; second, write your own versions; finally, role-play the whole interview with your student partner.,UNIT ONE,Applying for a Corporate Job,Part one,T

9、ask One Tell Me About Yourself.,Using the following statement as a guide, write your own answer to the interview question:“Tell me about yourself.”This is usually called your “Personal Statement” and is used (in full or in part) in your Rsum and also in your Cover Letter when you write a job applica

27、 you may be thought of as wanting to avoid working hard or proving your skills and worth to the company. Second, if you dont sound ambitious enough, the company may feel it can hire others to do your job. The first sentence of the Guide sets the “tone” and is recommended for use in your version. Bei

The Difference Between Rsums and CVs These two names descr

34、ibe the same document and they both have the same purpose, although there are technical differences. “Rsum” is the name mostly used by the US and Canadian companies. Britain and other English-speaking countries tend to use “Curriculum Vitae”(CV). Non-English-speaking foreign companies operating in C

35、hina will expect job applicants to submit an English- language Rsum with their job applications and interviews are conducted in English.,Part two,Communication Skill Training,Step 1,It is considerable to list more skills in your Rsum than you express in the interview. Your Rsum should be clear and a

36、bove all it should be brief. For new graduates, the Rsum should not be more than 1 page. It is your most important job hunting document and will be updated from time to time during your whole career. Another important point is that your Rsum is competing with many othersperhaps hundreds of. It takes

37、 great effort to produce a Rsum that stands out and says to the employer: “I must invite this young man/woman into the office for an interview”.,Part two,Communication Skill Training,Step 2,Equally important, is the Cover Letter. You should never send your Rsum to an employer without one. Until you

38、add some work experience, your Rsum will remain unchanged for many job applications. The Cover Letter will change for every job application and should highlight the skills and grades/subjects that seem most relevant to the position you are applying for. Remember, the Cover Letter is your first point

39、 of contact with the employer and importantly lets you address the employer by name. In general, a personal photograph should appear in the top right corner of your Rsum. It is a good idea to use a Rsum photograph that is taken for this purpose.,Part two,Communication Skill Training,Step 2,You shoul

40、d not use your student ID or drivers licence photograph for your Rsum as these require you to be serious and without a smile. Your student ID photograph taken when you were a freshman will be out-of-date by the time you graduate. You want to have a “young adult who is ready for work” image, not a ch

41、ildish image. A suitable photograph will be “head and shoulders” with a pleasant expression which could be described as a “partial smile”. It should be full face but not look like an ID picture. Typeface and font size should be considered carefully. Ariel typeface is the most popular for your Rsum.

42、It is particularly easy to read on screen. Font size11 or 12 fits on one page.
