4、entdivorce,andremarriage.Robert,theblindman,hasjustlosthiswifeandwillbetravelingtoConnecticuttovisitwithherfamily.Alongthewayhewillspendthenightatthehomeofthenarratorandhiswife.HiswifetellsthenarratorthatRobertandhiswife,Beulah,wereinseparable.ThemesAlienationandLonelinessLikethecharactersinmanyofCa
5、rversworks,themaincharactersexperience,orhaveexperienced,alienationandloneliness.Thenarratorisunhappyinhiswork,jealousofhiswife,andunconnectedtootherhumanbeings.Inadditiontonotbeingconnectedtoothershimself,heseemstoresenthiswifesconnectionstootherpeopleaswell.Whenhespeaksoftheimpendingvisitbytheblin

7、ohappenstobeblind,isonhiswaytovisit.Thenarratorisnotenthusiasticaboutthevisitbecauseblindpeoplemakethenarratoruncomfortable,mainlybecausethenarratorhasnorealexperiencewiththeblind.Inadditiontohisuneasinesswiththeblind,thenarratorisuncomfortablewithhiswifesrelationshipwiththeblindman.ThewifeandRobert
8、,theblindman,havemaintainedacloserelationshipviataperecordingsmailedbackandforth,andthenarratorfindsthisunsettling.Despitethenarratorsfeelingsaboutthevisit,Robertshowsup,andthethreeofthemdinetogether,andRobertandthenarratorgettoknoweachotherCharactersRobert:Robert,theblindman,isalong-timefriendofthe
9、narratorswife.Roberthasmaintainedacloserelationshipwiththenarratorswifesincesheworkedforhimyearsago.Sincethen,theyhavestayedintouch.Robertworkshardtogettoknowthatnarrator,too,whileheisvisitingthem,pushingthenarratortotalkandinteractwithhim,bringingthenarratoroutofhisshellofclosed-offignorance.Thenar
10、ratorswifealsoseemstohavesomeinternalstruggle,mainlyduetowhatisdivulgedaboutherpast.Shewasmarriedbeforeandsufferedfromloneliness.Shehasattemptedsuicideinthepast,andnowsheisinadifficultmarriageonceagain.Surely,hadthestorybeentoldfromherperspective,thedepthsofherinternalstrugglewouldbebroughtfurtherto
11、lightAttheendof“Cathedral,”thenarratorhasalife-changingmoment,oranepiphany,whiletryingtotellRobertwhatacathedrallookslike.Thenarrator,whenfirsttryingtoexplainwhatthecathedrallookslike,strugglesforthewords.However,uponRobertsencouragement,loosensup,anddrawsthecathedralwithRobert,guidinghishandwithape
12、ncilontopaper.Thisisaclosepersonalconnectionandintimatemomentofcommunicationforthenarrator,anditimpactshimgreatly.ThenarratorisabletoconnectwithRobert,andthisisthemomentwherethenarratorcanputasidehisinsecuritiesandactuallyinteractwithsomeoneelse.Itchangesthenarrator;hesays,“Itwaslikenothingelseinmyl
13、ifeuptonow”(Carver108).ThroughoutCathedral,theboundariesthenarratorhasplacedonhisinteractionandcommunicationwithothersareerodedbyRobertspatientpersistenceingettingtoknowhim.Asaresult,thenarratorconfrontshisowninsecuritiesandmisconceptions,notjustaboutRobertandtheblind,butalsoabouthisownabilitytointeractwithothers.
