10、osed-offignorance.Thenarratorswifealsoseemstohavesomeinternalstruggle,mainlyduetowhatisdivulgedaboutherpast.Shewasmarriedbeforeandsufferedfromloneliness.Shehasattemptedsuicideinthepast,andnowsheisinadifficultmarriageonceagain.Surely,hadthestorybeentoldfromherperspective,thedepthsofherinternalstruggl
11、ewouldbebroughtfurthertolightAttheendof“Cathedral,”thenarratorhasalife-changingmoment,oranepiphany,whiletryingtotellRobertwhatacathedrallookslike.Thenarrator,whenfirsttryingtoexplainwhatthecathedrallookslike,strugglesforthewords.However,uponRobertsencouragement,loosensup,anddrawsthecathedralwithRobe
12、rt,guidinghishandwithapencilontopaper.Thisisaclosepersonalconnectionandintimatemomentofcommunicationforthenarrator,anditimpactshimgreatly.ThenarratorisabletoconnectwithRobert,andthisisthemomentwherethenarratorcanputasidehisinsecuritiesandactuallyinteractwithsomeoneelse.Itchangesthenarrator;hesays,“I
13、twaslikenothingelseinmylifeuptonow”(Carver108).ThroughoutCathedral,theboundariesthenarratorhasplacedonhisinteractionandcommunicationwithothersareerodedbyRobertspatientpersistenceingettingtoknowhim.Asaresult,thenarratorconfrontshisowninsecuritiesandmisconceptions,notjustaboutRobertandtheblind,butalsoabouthisownabilitytointeractwithothers.
