One after another, big bands arrive, along with thousands of dancers and musicians. The Carnival is beginning!CARLA: Sorry were late. I had to get Li Mei some comfortable
19、 shoes!WU PING: No problem. Weve just got here. But I forgot my water- can I have some of yours?LI MEI: Me too! We just came, and Im already tired and thirsty!CARLA: Were each going to need a lot of water tonight! Shall I run over to the stand there and get something to drink for everybody?HARI: Hur
20、ry up, Carla! The bands are moving!CARLA : OK, Ill hurry! But remember were going to go slowly at first, so Wu Ping and Li Mei can get used to the music and the heat!HARI : Yeah, OK! 37、RS AS PART OF FESTIVALSFlowers are part of many festivals, and, in some countries, the festivals main focus! For example, Japans Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated every spring. When flowers come out on the cherry trees, friends and families have picnic under the trees, surrounded by a sea of bea
38、utiful pink flowers. There are other activities for the festival, such as parades, music performances and folk dancing, but the main activity is just going out to enjoy the beauty of the flowers.Another festival about festival is the Well Dressing Festival in the UK. This very old festival is celebr
39、ated by small towns in Derbyshire. People use flowers, nuts, seeds and other things to form beautiful pictures in soft clay around an old well. These pictures can take up to seven days to finish, but they last only a few days before the flowers and other things fall out. Often school classes will wo
40、rk together to make a well-dressing.Easter does not celebrate flowers, but flowers are an important part of the festival. The Easter lily has become a common symbol of Easter, because its clean, white beauty is a reminder of new life.Many holidays have the custom of giving flowers to a loved one. Fo

For Mothers Day, many countries have the tradition of children from young to old honouring their mothers with a gift of flowers, such as carnations.In all these festivals and many more, flowers are often used to express

When is the last time you bought or received flowers as part of a festival?7.WINTER CARNIVAL IN QUEBEC A group of very cold tourists are sitting in a cafe in old Quebec, drinking hot coffee to try to warm up. The temperature is 32 degrees below freezing. The windows are
43、 covered with steam from the heat inside. Outside, snow covers the streets and is piled up along the sidewalks. The music and lights of theCarnival continue, but after a whole day of watching parades, riding in horse carriages and listening to the music, their feet are freezing and their noses are r
44、ed. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people come to Quebec to take part in the week-long winter festival, the biggest in the world. Everyone who comes must be prepared to keep moving, as it is too cold to stand and watch for long. Early in the morning, you can watch the snowboarding competitions
45、 on the hill overlooking the river. Competitors speed down the track and through the air as though they could fly. The more brave of heart may try the canoe races. Five or six men paddle each canoe across the partly-frozen St Lawrence River. The river is full of big pieces of ice, and if you were to
46、 fall in, you would freeze inless than two minutes. One of the favourite events is the dog-sled race, in which teams of about six husky dogs pull long sleds at great speeds along a snowy track. One person runs behind the sled, shouting to the dogs to encourage them. The sound of the dogs barking, th
47、e calls of the drivers and the shouts of the crowd make an exciting Northern experience. The dogs are beautiful strong animals, with long, thick fur and many with blue eyes. While admiring the ice sculptures everywhere in the city, much like those in Harbin in China, you can stop with other tourists
48、 in an igloo ( 圆顶冰屋) for hot tea or coffee. It is amazing how warm these ice houses can be! Late in the evening, you can go to the snow palace, where Bonhomme the snowman is king, and join the crowd. You can dance outside to the music of a band, who are all dressed in heavy clothes - even some of th
49、eir instruments are dressed up for winter. Finally, you will probably want to sit down in a cafe to warm up and to plan tomorrow.
