They were all skin and bone, buthunger made them fight like wild things. Threeof them attacked Buck and in seconds hishead and legs were badly bitten. Despi

8、te this,Buck fought bravely. He caught a dog by theneck and tasted blood. He threw himself onthe next one, and then felt teeth in his ownneck. It was Spitz, attacking him from the side.7Perrault and Franois came to helpwith clubs, but then they had to run back tosave the food. It was safer for the s

9、ledge-dogsto run away across the lake. 12、m the Indian dogs.10Theharnesswastornanddamaged and it was two hours before theywere moving, traveling slowly and painfullyover the most difficult country that they hadbeen in.11The Thirty Mile River was notfrozen. It ran too fast to freeze. They spent sixdays trying to find a place to cross, and ev

13、erystep was dangerous for dogs and men. Once,the sledge fell through the ice, with Dave andBuck, and they were covered in ice by thetime Perrault and Franois pulled them out ofthe river and had to light a fire to dry andwarmthem,asthetemperaturewas45degrees below zero. Another time, Spitz andthe dog

14、s in front fell through the iceBuckand Dave and Francois at the sledge had topull backwards. One dayFranois made four little shoes for him, and thismade Buck much more comfortable. Franoisforgot the shoes one morning, and Buckr

He lay on his back with hisfeet in the air, until Franois put the shoes on.Later his feet grew harder and the shoes werenot needed.14One morning, at the Pelly River, adog called Dolly went suddenly mad, andjumped at Buck. Buck ran, with Dolly one stepbehind him. She could not catch h

19、im, but hecould not escape from her. They ran half akilometre, and then Buck heard Franois call tohim. Nearby wasanother camp, with fifty dogs, who al

27、so joinedthe chase. The rabbit was running fast on topof the snow, but the snow was soft, and it wasmore difficult for the dogs. When Spitz caughtthe rabbit, throwing it in the air with his teeth,Buck was just behind. Spitz stopped, andBuck hit him, very hard. The two dogs fell inthe snow. Spitz bit

28、 Buck very quickly, twice,and then jumped away, watching carefully.22The time had come, and Buckknew that either he or Spitz must die. Theywatched one another, circling slowly. Themoon was shining brightly on the snow, and inthe cold still air not a leaf moved on the trees.The other dogs finished ea

33、dnearer and nearer, waiting for the end. At lastBuck jumped, in and out, and Spitz went downin the snow. A second later the waiting packwasontopofhim,andSpitzhaddisappeared. Buck stood and watched. Thewild animal had made its kill.25And well travel faster now. Nomore Spitz, no more trouble, said Fra

34、ncoisthe next morning when he discovered thatSpitz had disappeared and that Buck wascovered in blood.26Franoisstartedtoharnessthedogs. He needed a new lead-dog.
