Thus she sometimes tries to find her identity from what she thinks is still worth appreciation
2、 of the black culture For example, the bench, the churn(搅乳器), the dasher(搅乳棒), and the two quilts(被褥). She deems those things aesthetic symbolic of the black culture Dee wanted to hang these quilts on her wall, because they had been made en-vogue(时尚) by the Black Power Movement, demonstrating that s
3、he does not understand her culture and its core values of simplicity and practicalityDee wanted to change her name to “Wangero” ,thinking that “Dee” is a name from the white people. She doesnt know that she is named after her aunt and even further ,her great-grandmother. The mother wanted her to rem
4、ember the tradition and history of the family by the name, but she actually knows nothing about the origin of the name Maggie is “a kind of cinderella” , she is the younger one of the two daughters and in every aspect the absolute counterpart of Dee. innocent, simple-minded , disfigured, timid(胆怯的)
5、, unconfident and kind-hearted ,slow Her lack of self-confidence both shows in the way she walks and the way she admires her elder sister “with a mixture of envy and awe” . Timid : ” when her sister arrives at home, she attempt to make a dash for the house ” and when her sisters boyfriend greet her
6、, her reflection.” He moves to hug maggie but she falls back, right up against the back of my chair. I feel her trembling there and when I look up I see the perspiration falling off her chin. ” She has a “thin body” . she “knows she is not bright” and bears severe scars on her arms and legs from a f
7、ire that burned the Johnsons earlier house to the ground . She seems to be quite uneducated although Mrs. Johnson tells us that “sometimes Maggie reads to her” . But in contrast to Dee, Maggie loves her family and knows about its history and traditions. Maggie wanted the quilt because she could reme
8、mber her grandma better, who taught her to do needle work. 12、 type of awe and fear more suitable to the advent(出现,降临) of a goddess than the love one might expect a mother to feel for a returning daughter.A re-evaluation of Dee Mama is wrong about her expectations of Dee and her readings of Dees emotions. She thinks that Dee would hate the house as much as she
13、 had hated the first house. Yet, the truth is Dee values the current house. A re-evaluation of Dee Most readers may think this shows Dees ever-changing attitude towards fashion. She changes to follow whatever current fashion. However, this might not be true because Mamas earlier impressions of Dee m
14、ay be exaggerated. An Evaluation of Dee Dee is described as shallow, condescending, (故意屈尊的)and manipulative, (操纵的,控制的)as overly concerned with style, fashion, and aesthetics, and thus as lacking a true understanding of her heritage. An Evaluation of Dee However, Susan Farrell suggests Dee nevertheless offers a view of heritage and a strategy for contemporary African Americans to cope with an oppressive society that is, in some ways, more valid than that offered by Mama and Maggie.
