Fears about its over reliance on vendor financing to make sales have made Zoomlion the most shorted stock in Hong Kong as hedge funds bet that the rapid growth of t

More than 20 per cent, or about HK$3bn ($386m) worth, of Zoomlions HK$14.7bn Hong Kong stock is out on loan, according to Data Explorers, making it the most borrowed stock in the market, a title it has held for several months. Zoomlion said
40、that vendor financing is an international mode of business practised by Caterpillar and many other companies in its sector. It added that it has developed risk control systems and that its financing programme is transparent through its annual report, unlike some other Chinese companies which use obs
41、cure affiliates. However, some fear that buyers of its concrete mixing machines are doubling up on their debt by using new machines as collateral for further loans. The concrete mixing companies themselves are then in turn selling their ready mixed concrete on credit to cash-strapped property develo

Analysts at Jefferies in Hong Kong, who went to Jiangsu province to study the concrete market in April, reckon that more than half of the concrete machines sold in the first quarter by Zoomlion had not even been switched on. Customers were putting the machines in storage and only wanted them t
43、o generate cash that they need to pay salaries, electricity bills and buy raw materials. “To get more loans, they tend to buy many more machines than they need one buyer was said to have bought eight when it initially wanted two,” said Julian Bu at Jefferies. Beijing has been fighting to deflate the

Sales have continued to grow this year, with Zoomlions first quarter 8 per cent ahead of the same period last year. I
46、n contrast, Caterpillar said in the first quarter that it had overestimated Chinese demand for construction equipment and expected a decline in China this year, down from its prior forecast of growth of 5-10 per cent. According to one hedge fund trader, Zoomlion is also an expensive company because
47、it has a market value of about one-fifth that of Caterpillar, even though it is not even Chinas biggest machinery company. Traders and prime brokers contacted by the Financial Times stressed that they did not suspect the kind of governance problems or even fraud that have harmed other Chinese groups
