II.Comments on the Stories Simple words and common stories feature largely in the novels of Ernest Hemingway. But it is
15、not difficult to find that, only by pondering could we uncover the truth hidden by the appearance of the brief words. For example, A Clean Well -Lighted Place, in this story there are no complicated words, no magnificent sentences and even no attracting plots. But it was the simple story reveals the
16、 nada of life. An old man, who wants to drive away the loneliness, always drinks in the bar. Two waiters, one is young and newly married, hurried to go home every night. The other one, who is older, along could feel sympathy and understand the old man. The depressing and gloomy setting, the vivid ch
17、aracters and the arrangement of the plot even the refined words make the theme clearly .People would like to get rid of the nada of life. They need communication, they want understanding and they hate loneliness. While Edgar Allan Poe who was well known for his short stories, wrote about seventy sto

The whole passage developed around the three themes which acted the important clues. Finally, it reflected Mark Twain?s humorous and ironic writing style. Young
23、 Goodman Brown was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne who was an American novelist and short story writer in the 19th century, born in Salem, Massachusetts as Nathaniel Hawthorne He was greatly influenced by Puritanism, Transcendentalism and Mysticism, which can be traced in his works. Much of Hawthorne
24、?s writing centers on New England and many feature moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic Movement. Alice Walker is one of the most remarkable and influential Afro go-American writers in contemporary American literary world .She is
37、 one of the majority of critics .As a black woman ,writer ,her background provides the sources of her work ,especially work describing colored people?s life . The modern classic ?Every day use for your grandmamma? tells the story of a mother and her two daughters?complexing ideas about their identit
38、ies and ancestry .the mother narrates the story of the day one daughter,Dee,visites from college and clashes with the other daughter ,Maggie ,over the possession of the some heirloom quilts . The quilts in the story are symbolized as the African American culture heritages .By presenting the two daug
39、hters? means of treating the quilts in the story .Walker reveals different attitudes on these heritages, which to some extend were confused by black people in America.
