12、 comedy character in films and TV series.He has a reputationfor constantly encountering awkward situations,which greatly amuses audiences of all nationalities and cultures.His humour is always made clear through a series of simple and funny acts that rely purely on body language thatis universal.One

13、 of my favourite episodes was Mr Bean in a fancy restaurant.After being seated at his table,Mr Beantakes out a card,writes a few words on it,puts it in an envelope and places it on the table.After a moment,helooks back at the envelope but this time he looks surprised,as if he did not know it was the

14、re.He opens it to find abirthday card and very happily puts it on the table for everyone to see.When he looks at the menu,an astonishedlook quickly appears on his face.He takes all the money out of his wallet,counts it and puts it in a saucer.He thenlooks from the menu to the money with concern unti

15、l he finds one thing that makes him smile.Then he orders adish called“steak tartare”.When the dish arrives,he is shocked to discover that“steak tartare”is actually rawhamburger.He makes an attempt to eat it,but it is clear from his look as he is chewing that he finds the taste trulyawful.He cannot h

16、ide his feelings,except when the waiters ask if everything is all right.When this happens,hesmiles and nods,indicating that everything is fine.When the waiters are not looking,however,he busies himselfhiding the raw meat anywhere he can reachthe sugar bowl,the tiny flower vase,inside a bread roll an

17、d under aplate.He becomes so desperate in the end that he even hides some inside the purse of a woman sitting near himand throws some down the trousers of the restaurants violinist!TEXT 2The Contemporary ChaplinRowan Atkinson is an English actor,comedian and Screenwriter.In Britain,Mr Atkinson is mo

18、stly famousfor many successful TV shows but internationally we know him best as the awkward,clumsy,but alwaysamusing Mr Bean.But in reality he is nothing like Mr Bean.Rowan had a very successful academic career.At the age of 13 he was awarded a scholarship to aboarding school.Later,he studied at New

19、castle University where he attained the highest marks in his year.AtOxford,he obtained his masters degree in electrical engineering.This may explain why he loves fast cars,ofwhich he has many.When Rowan was young,he had a stutter and to make his speech clearer,he began to speakvery carefully.This ma

20、y be why some of his characters have unusual ways of speaking.As early as primaryschool,Rowan had already shown a talent for acting,but it was only later at university that he decided to becomean actor.A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror.“

24、cess and popularity of it,in particular,are interesting to explore.Humour is a part of every culture but it could be said that it is one of the core characteristics of Britishculture.British people expect everyone to have a sense of humour and its very much a part of daily life.You willoften find pa

25、ssengers getting on buses joking with drivers,doctors making light-hearted jokes to ease theirpatientsworries and business people making jokes in presentations to get their audiences attention.Humourhelps to buildrelationships,relaxmoodsanddevelop friendships.So now that we have established howimpor

26、tant humour is to British people,what exactly makes them laugh?And does British humour make sense toother cultures?Jokes are often related to culture.One example would be the British class system.There have been manypopular comedy TV programmes which have explored the absurdity of people with less m

27、oney and statusattempting to copy the lifestyles of the wealthy.It would be difficult perhaps,for non-British people to fullyunderstand that kind of humour.Another area comes to British comedy“word play”which often involve wordsthat have two meanings,or words that sound the same but have different m

28、eanings.There are lots of these inEnglish so British people really enjoy this kind of humour.For example,here is a classic joke:Patient:“Doctor,Doctor,help me please!Im getting shorter and shorter.”Doctor:“Just wait there and be a little patient.”Two other characteristics of British comedy that are

29、unique are joking about topics that would be considered“taboo”in other cultures and humour focused on self-depreciation.For example,a“taboo”topic might bepolitics and politicians,which are something British people love to joke about.People might gently mock peoplein positions of power“my boss cant r

30、un a bath,let alone this company”or mock oneself,for example“Im onthat new seafood diet.If I see food,I eat it!”Perhaps the most universally appealing type of British humour isthe visual,physical type of comedy used by Rowan Atkinson,Charlie Chaplin and others.They find humour inthe most simple,ever

31、yday situations and we tend to feel a mix of horror,embarrassment and delight watchingthem!Of course,whats funny for one person might not be for another.While one person might lightly giggle at ajoke,another might fall about with laughter.But the wide range of techniques used by British comedians an

41、oday?”And whenever the answer has been“no”for too many daysin a row,I know I need to change something.About a year ago,I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning and it clearly showed atumor(肿瘤)on my pancreas(胰腺).I didnt even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was

42、 almostcertainly a type of cancer that is incurable,and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months.My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order,which is doctors code for“prepare to die.”Itmeans to try and tell your kids everything you thought youd have the next te

43、n years to tell them,in just a fewmonths.It means to make sure that everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family.It means to say your goodbyes.I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a horrible medical examination where theystuck something dow

44、n my throat,through my stomach into my intestines(肠道),put a needle into my pancreasand got a few cells from the tumor.When the doctor viewed the cells under a microscope,he started crying,because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery

45、 and,thankfully,I am fine now.This was the closest Ive been to facing death,and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades.Noone wants to die,even people who want to go to Heaven dont want to die to get there,and yet,death is thedestination we all share.Your time is limited,so dont waste it
