8、 the mobile industry stepped forward and committed to all 17 SustainableDevelopment Goals(SDGs).Every year since,we have produced this report to update on progress,highlightsuccesses and identify areas that require even more considerable effort.As the world adapts to and emerges from the globalpande
9、mic,keeping the promise of the SDGs has neverbeen more critical.Before the Covid-19 outbreak,the world was not on track to meet the 2030 goals.Although there had been significant improvements inareas such as reducing poverty and gender equality,progress on other goals had stalled and,in some cases,r
10、eversed.While the full effect of the pandemic is not yetknown,it is clear that Covid-19 has set us even furtherback on achieving the“worlds to-do list.”billions of people relied on mobile technology for everyaspect of their day-to-day lives.Mobile connectivitybecame the lifeline keeping societies mo
11、ving as wesuddenly turned online for everything from educationto healthcare.Thanks to continued investment ininfrastructure and the resilience of networks,the mobileindustry continues to achieve its highest impact on SDG9:Industry,Innovation and Impact.Despite this achievement,the pandemic exposed a
12、ndincreased some of the greatest inequalities.Our digitaldivides are still there:people lacking digital skills,unconnected rural communities,SMEs not being able totransform digitally.Recent reporting by the UN and the World Bank showthat more people have been pushed into extremepoverty,gender inequa
13、lities have been exacerbated andthe climate crisis continues to worsen.The SDGs have never been more important.The world hasshown the ingenuity and drive that it is capable of overthe past two years.As we pause to reflect on our progressso far,we must look to the mammoth tasks ahead.As anindustry,we
14、 must continue to connect the unconnectedand we must enable other industries to realise theirmaximum effect on the SDGs.We call on world leaders,the public and private sector to work together toIn 2020,the global average SDG index score decreasedfor the first time since the adoption of the SDGs in 2
15、015.If we want to achieve the SDG targets by 2030,anextraordinary global effort will be required by everyone including governments,the private sector andindividuals.The global effort to develop vaccines forCovid-19 at unprecedented speed shows what humanbeings are capable of when we work together to
16、ward acommon goal.accelerate our progress towards achieving the SDGs.Despite the difficulties of the last 18 months,the mobileindustry has continued to increase its impact acrossevery SDG and,although the industrys progress sloweddown due to the crisis,the pandemic highlighted the vitalrole that mob

19、00 million peoplewith no 3G or 4G network coverage.However,3 billionpeople are left behind.This means that they have thecoverage,but do not benefit from it whether througha lack of digital skills,financial means or locally adaptedservices.How do we ensure our services do not exclude the mostvulnerab
20、le,but instead can be used to reduce social andgeographical inequalities?How do we collectively act to reduce climate change?We have the chance to be an industry that has supporteddevelopment and has built trust for over a century.Thebenefits of technological progress for humanity dependnot on the t
21、echnology,but on what we do with it.Thisis why each year we are proud to review our collectivecorporate progress on the SDGs and to share whatactions are needed to deliver the 2030 agenda.Yet,when we succeed in connecting people,weincrease equality,prosperity and well-being.With 30 million employees
22、,2.7 trillion CAPEX since2000,more than 5 billion people using a mobile phoneand 25 billion IoT connections across the world,themobile industry has shown that it has the powerand the scale to make a meaningful difference.Wewere one of the first industries to join the UnitedNations Sustainable Develo

26、l experiencing it.As of 8 September 2021,there had been over 220million confirmed Covid-19 cases globally and more than4.5million confirmed deaths.1 To mitigate the spread ofthe virus and avoid overwhelming public health systems,lockdown restrictions and social distancing measureshave been put in pl
27、ace.However,the subsequenteconomic and social impacts have been severe.In2020,255 million full-time jobs were lost,an additional119124million people were pushed into extreme povertyand 101 million children fell below the minimum readingproficiency level amid widespread school closures.2Furthermore,d
28、espite the slowdown in economic activityand global travel restrictions,the pandemic has donelittle to mitigate the ongoing climate crisis.3Looking forward,the global economy is set to expandby 5.6%in 2021 its strongest post-recession pacein 80 years.4 However,the recovery is set to beuneven and larg
29、ely reflects sharp rebounds in somemajor economies.In many low-and middle-incomecountries(LMICs)the outlook is less positive,asobstacles to vaccination continue to weigh on socialand economic activity.As a result,the serious health,economic and social consequences of the pandemicare likely to contin

32、haverelied on the internet to stay connected to friendsand family,access education and health services,and work remotely.This underscores the importanceof connectivity in our daily lives and,in particular,the value of mobile networks,which remain the onlyform of internet access for many people.Howev
33、er,the pandemic has also shone a light on the need tobridge the digital divide.People without internetaccess are most vulnerable to the economic andsocial disruptions caused by the pandemic.This hasincreased the urgency of identifying solutions toaccelerate mobile internet adoption and use.This sixt
34、h annual SDG impact report demonstrates themobile industrys continued commitment to the SDGs.It shows that,despite the significant challenges posedby the pandemic,the mobile industry increased itscontribution to all 17 SDGs in 2020.This reflects the effortsof mobile operators and their partners in r
35、espondingquickly and effectively to the Covid-19 crisis.Operatorsin every region have been proactive in reaching out totheir customers,working with public authorities and thirdparties to provide a range of vital services,and supportingthe communities in which they operate.However,whilethe mobile ind

37、ey findingsThe mobile industry is halfway to maximising itspotential impact on the SDGs.The average SDG impact score improvementslowed in 2020 amid the Covid-19 crisis.33%48%50%201520192020In 2020,the mobile industry increased its impactfor each of the 17 SDGs,achieving an average SDGimpact score of
38、 50.This means the industry isachieving 50%of its potential contribution to theSDGs up from 48%in 2019 and 33%in 2015.Progress cannot be taken for granted,especiallywith the pandemic undermining decades ofdevelopment efforts.There are less than 10 yearsleft to achieve the 2030 SDG targets and therei
39、s more to be done to accelerate the mobileindustrys impact.Mobile adoption continued to increase in 2020,despite the economic recession,supporting theindustrys contribution to multiple SDGs.5.2 billion people(67%of the global population)3.3 billion people(64%of mobile subscribers)By the end of 2020,
40、5.2 billion people(67%of theglobal population)were using a mobile phone,representing an increase of 90 million people since2019.In addition,four billion people(51%of the globalpopulation)were also using the mobile internet,which is an increase of 220 million since 2019.used mobile to make video call
41、s,aiding several onlineactivities,including e-learning,telehealth and remoteworking.This represents an additional 440 millionpeople since 2019.This supports the mobile industryscontribution to SDG 3:Good Health,SDG 4:QualityEducation and SDG 8:Decent Work and Economic Growth.2.6 billion people2.3 bi

45、2020,69%of operators byconnections and 80%by revenue disclosedtheir climate impacts,while 31%of operators byconnections and 36%by revenue had set carbonreduction targets to be net zero by 2050.The mobile industry achieves its highest impacton SDG 9:Industry,Innovation and Infrastructure,driven by th
46、e reach of mobile.Despite rising mobile data traffic,mobilenetworks delivered a 33%improvement indownload speeds in 2020.33%3 G4 G5 G94%87%17%At the end of 2020,3G population coveragereached 94%(equivalent to 7.3 billion people),while 4G population coverage totalled 87%(equivalent to 6.7 billion peo
47、ple).5G networkscovered 17%of the global population withcoverage above 80%in six markets.Rising 4G adoption,in addition to 5G take-up in pioneering markets such as Chinaand South Korea,was the key driver of theimprovement in mobile data speeds.Thisenables mobile to support a broad range ofservices,e
48、nhancing the industrys SDG impact.Mobile operators played a pivotal role inkeeping individuals safe and economiesfunctioning in the pandemic.An important lesson from the Covid-19 crisis hasbeen the importance of cooperation in tacklingbig issues in society.Mobile operators have been proactive inreac
