4、ction Long time ago, there were many countries all over the world. Each country had their own languages. It was very difficult for people to communicate with each other. At the time, scientific and technical levels were backward and wars broke out frequently. In 1945, the United Nations was founded
5、and English was used as one of the official languages. People throughout the world started to learn English as the second language. As a result, communication between countries became more convenient. For example, if there was a new invention in a country, it would be published in the newspaper. We
6、could learn about it by reading the newspaper and applied it to life. Therefore, it was very important to learn English.The 21st century is a new age, which is characterized by the quick rate of the society and the colorful changes day by day. With the well-developed science and technique, the commu
7、nications between countries become frequent and convenient. And the world becomes more and more small. Some people say the whole world is like a large market or a global village, and people from different places have to communicate from time to time. Some people trade with each other; some transmigr
8、ate from one place to another; some communicate with their relatives afar. In order to make a right and correct decision, people will consult information to know the situation of other areas. Day by day, English has developed as a global language, and English newspapers, due to their typical charact
9、eristics, becomes one of the most popular mass media. As an English learner, in order to master the modern language, reading English newspapers is a necessary and effective way.Today, English newspapers are fashionable. Their page make-up is artistic and colorful, and their contents are new and vivi
10、d, while most contents of textbooks in universities are dull and traditional ones. In order to keep up with the time, as well as to rectify the disadvantages of textbooks, English learners should use English newspapers effectively. In this paper, I will present an investigation about the role readin
11、g English newspapers plays in learning the language. It analyses the questionnaire and provokes some practical opinions, in the hope of providing some helpful advice for English learners. 1.Research on Reading English NewspapersAn investigation has been carried out on how to improve English through
12、reading English newspapers by consulting the documents, interviewing the colleagues and discussing with friends. The research consists of three parts: journalistic language, colorful news subjects, and getting opinions objectively.1.1 Journalistic LanguageNewspaper is a mass media, which conveys new
13、 information in time. As is well known, one of the most important factors which affect newspapers existing, development and success is the quick rate. Journalists, in order to deliver news reports much quickly, are used to adopting some journalistic language. While according to the analysis of featu
14、res of thinking in the course of second language learning, the learning of new vocabulary and short terms is an absolute necessary process of learning a language well. Usually journalistic language is colorful and appealing. The typical character of English news is that the content of news is curren
15、t. Moreover, it is accurate, clear, simple and original. Understanding and learning journalistic language is a good way of mastering modern language.Many famous linguists have studied the journalistic language because it is the direct expression of the feature of modern English. For example, Geoffre
16、y Leech once concluded the journalistic language as the mass spoken language. With the typical journalistic language, English newspapers broadcast the local news about western countries, so that English learners could learn the pure and excellent English through reading them seriously.Journalistic l
17、anguage includes a large abundant of vocabularies. In this information time, with the explosion of information, many useful as well as popular words appeared in newspapers first. Part of the new words could not be complied in the dictionary at the beginning, such as “globalizations”, which is compou
18、nded by words of “global” and “localization”, and easily we know it means that the local culture is welcomed and popular in the whole world. Through guessing, readers learn the new words.Also, some new words appear repeatedly in newspaper for a particular period, and this is a good chance for reader
19、s to remember the typical words. For example, during the period of UN investigating the nuclear weapon in Iraq, words like Inspection, Sanction, Biological Weapons, Comply with, Resolution, appeared again and again. For the first time, readers meet them and consult the dictionary, learners go over t
20、hem and remember them naturally.As we all know, most typical journalistic language is abbreviated expression. Usually they refer to the organization or some things which people are familiar with, and unit the first capital letters of each word. For example, CIA=Central Intelligence Agency. EEC=Europ
21、ean Economy Community, CAAC=Civil Aviation Administration of China, HKSAR= Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, ICRC=International Committee of the Red Cross, UFO=Unidentified Flying Object, and so on. This is suitable to the news requirements of quickness, simplicity and correctness.Still, in o
22、rder to realize the vividness and simplicity of a piece of news, compound words are widely used in English newspapers. This kind of word is understandable, easy and vivid, while not affect the newspaper reading, such as, Round-the-clock Discussion, A Walk-on Appearance, Cross-border Raid, National S
23、ecurity Matters, A Not-so-strong Football Team, etc.Like Chinese newspapers, idioms are popular in English newspapers. Idiom is the shadow of western culture. In fact, most of them originate from the Bible, Greek and Roman mythology, or other classical literature.Bible plays an important role in Wes
24、tern culture. So some idioms, like Forbidden Fruit, the Blind Leading to the Blind, Eye for Eye, and so on, come from Bible. As the origin of western culture, Greek and Roman mythology is one of the sources of idioms. This kind of idiom includes a Fabian policy, hector a person, and so on. For anoth
25、er source, the English classical literature, the most popular one is plays of Shakespeare. Many marvelous words are inherited by later generations, and formed one of the most important parts in English language, like the idioms which we are familiar with, Ivory Tower, to the Manner Born, and so on.T

With the well development of this society, the name of newborn things appears every day, especially in the fields of art and science. Such as, Splash down, Space Sickness, Space Age, Watergate, and so on.Meanwhile, countries wit
27、h English as their mother tongue or the second language spread everywhere. All differences in customs, social circumstance and living habits are reflected in English newspapers. In recent years, new words, which express our Chinese policies, appeared frequently in English newspapers, such as three r
28、epresentatives, keeping pace with the time, overall national power, etc. Through reading English newspapers, we get familiar with Chinese and English meanings of these expressions. Reading English newspaper is not only meeting our learning needs, but also raising our interest of learning English wel
29、l.The large amounts of newly appeared words show that English is developing with the pace of society.1.2 Colorful News SubjectsThe content of English newspaper includes the latest news and fresh things in each field. Through reading English newspapers, readers get abundant knowledge. This is an adva
30、ntage of newspapers compared with the textbooks. Each issue includes straight news reports, depth report, interpretive report, investigative report and feature, and refers to different fields, such as politics, army, economy, technology, culture, education, sport, diplomacy, advertisement, and so on

Through reading these pieces of news, learners could not only improve the English reading comprehension, and stress the feeling for the language, but also benefit from English writing of all kinds of styles. Meanwhile, learners would find that English is a living language. It is developing. In thi
32、s process, readers learn its traditional standard grammar as well as the modern English, so as to use it freely and excellently.1.3 Unique Advantages of Reading English Newspapers In addition, reading English newspaper is a practical and interesting way of learning English well. On one hand, English
33、 newspaper, as a popular mass media, is easier, cheaper and more convenient to get. Learners can buy it from retailers, exchange with peers or look over it on the Internet freely. It can be afforded to young students. It can be got from the kiosk beside the street, ordered in a particular period. So
34、me learners are busy every day, but they can read some English news on internet in spare time, which is a more convenient and active way.Nowadays, the page make-up of English newspaper is beautiful and colorful, and attracts learners a lot. Usually editors treat the headline as the eye of English ne
35、wspaper, and compare the page make-up to its face. They arrange the front page deliberately in different ways with various styles of letters, and all kinds of cartoons. For example, we often find that some news headline is printed with all capital letters, so it is eye catching, artistic, and statel
36、y.The format of headlines are various to the aim of beauty on the whole page. Such as cross line or key line, flush-left heading, drop line or step heading, full-line, inverted pyramid form, banner head or streamer, over line or kicker, jump head, and so on.In fact, reading English newspapers is a p
37、ractical way of in-put English. It is helpful to adapt the instinctive feeling for language and reading ability, as well as express ourselves in English.2. Findings on Reading English NewspapersIn order to learn the typical situation about reading English newspapers in campus thoroughly, and provoke
38、 some practical and useful opinions, the present author designed a questionnaire about English newspaper reading for the juniors in English department of Heihe College, to investigate their experiences and feelings about improving English through reading English newspapers.2.1 Current Situation of R
39、eading English NewspapersTo write this paper, the author made a simple questionnaire to junior students in English department of Heihe College. About 80 students participated (in). The questionnaire is designed as follows:Q1-3 are about students general ideas about reading English newspapers and the
40、ir reading habits; Q4-6 are about their general knowledge about English newspapers; Q7-9 are about the time they spend in reading English newspapers; Q10-13 are about their motivation of reading English news; Q14-24 are about the techniques which students usually adopted in the process of reading En
41、glish news; Q25-31 are about the students feedback on reading English newspapers. The analysis of the questionnaire is as follows:2.1.1 The General Situation of Reading English Newspapers As the result of questionnaire, most students are fond of reading newspapers. Yet it is a pity that few of them
42、love reading English newspapers.Juniors know lots of English newspapers, both at home and abroad, such as China Daily, Beijing Review, Beijing Weekend, Business Weekly, Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, Times, Observer, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, Financial Times, an
43、d so on. And English newspapers, like 21st Century, China Daily or English Weekly, which are easier to get, are much more popular, though many students are used to go over news on internet. Yet the most popular one in English majors is 21st Century. As we all know, 21st Century is an English newspap
44、er, which is authored by the Chinese. It is much easier and closer to university students. However, it has the typical thinking way of Chinese in some aspects. In it, English professors usually introduce some skeptics of learning English, or report some forecast about national examination. It also w
45、elcomes readers write to them and communicate with them. These aspects are helpful to English learning and writing. Therefore, it may be proper to English beginners. Its easier words and expressions encourage beginners greatly while English majors should read some western newspapers so as to get fam
46、iliar with their thinking ways and pure expressions. 2.1.2 The Limited Time Used in Reading English NewspaperIn this survey, most students could not insist on reading English newspapers every day, though some believe that they could read it two or three times in a week. If the teacher supervises, th
47、ey could read everyday in a short period.On average, students spend 30 minutes on reading English newspaper everyday. And few people never read it.As for the way of getting English newspaper, 33% students are used to buying it on retail, 30% students borrow it from classmates or go to library, and 3
48、7% students would like to read it on Internet. For booking English newspapers, most people are used to booking issues, instead of daily newspapers.2.1.3 Relations about Different Purposes and Various Methods of Reading English Newspapers The purpose of reading English newspaper is various. 22% people want to relax themselves, 40% people want to improve their English reading; and 38% people want to broaden the
