2、hgrade.AndIamjustsogladthatallcouldjoinustoday.AndIwanttothankWakefieldforbeingsuchanoutstandinghost.Giveyourselvesabigroundofapplause.(Applause.)Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayinanewschool,soitsunderstandab
3、leifyourealittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow-(applause)-withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucouldvestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedov
4、erseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.Butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:30int
5、hemorning.Now,asyoumightimagine,Iwasnttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Andalotoftimes,Idfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButImheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.ImherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhats
6、expectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.Now,Ivegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndIvetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.Ivetalkedaboutteachersresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushingyoutolearn.Ivetalkedaboutyourparentsresponsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andyougetyourhomeworkdone,anddontspendeve
7、rywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox.Ivetalkedalotaboutyourgovernmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarentworking,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,the
8、mostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld-andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.Th
9、atswhatIwanttofocusontoday:theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation.Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanp
10、rovide.amayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice-butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyoullneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary
11、?Youregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.Youvegottotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit.Andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAme
12、ricadependsonyou.Whatyourelearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.Ladiesandgentlemen,Myfriends,ihopethatyouhavealreadygotwhatuniversityisallabout.pleaseletmeendmyspeechwiththenobelprizewinnerlifirstofall,ihopeyouhaveasmithtimegettingsettledhere.ikn
