1、Using English as an instructional language for the course called“Technical Writing”-Offered mainly for the Graduate students.Fu Jen Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Engineering I will present some points based on my experience and the response from the students at present and the previous y
2、ears.This course involves not about the research process itself。The purpose is to show students how to translate their research activities into written reports that conform to the expectations of the English-speaking scientific/academic community2 2The Important Components of CommunicationSpeakingWr

8、te theirresearch into English written form,it is better to use Englishas an instructional language rather than using any othermedium.5 5Many of the advanced technical books are written(in English)in the US and the Taiwan bookstores get the copy right and they do reprint for Taiwan situation.Ex:Progr
9、amming language text books,Computer text books Advanced level.Even though the translated versions of those text books are available,students feel it is very difficult to translate those scientific terms into Chinese language.Sometime students aremislead when the correct translations are not provided
10、.Using English as an instructional language can correct thosemisunderstandings.6 6The textbooks for most of the courses in the field of science are in English,and if we expect the students to read the text books in English and the class presentation slides are in English,why not use English as an in
11、structional language?It would definitely help the students prepare better.7 7All the Ph.D students should have published at least two research papers either nationally or internationally in a conferenceproceedings or in a Journal,before their oral defense.(Graduate school requirement)If the graduate
12、 institute demands such publications,the instructor uses English as an instructional language,it woulddefinitely help students prepare their scientific papers.Besides,it will be a great help for the students to read the recentresearch papers in their own field and understand quickly.Students need to
13、 read and understand the internationalJournals and conference proceedings.Students need to interact with other scholars from different parts of the world.They will be betterequipped if English language is used in the graduate schools.8 8When the students are in graduate school,they do attend interna
14、tional conferences to get to know what is going on in theirfield of research as well as exchange ideas.If the instructor uses English as an instructional language,they canget used to listening in English and respond clearly.Most of the students do get some chances to attend internationalconferences.
15、They do find it difficult to answer some of the questions raised by other scholars coming from different background.If they are used to English as a medium of instruction,they will be better prepared to attend and exchange ideas in aninternational conference.9 9If Taiwan needs to attract well known
16、scholars to teach and to do research here in Taiwan,they need to better equip the studentswith good speaking and writing skills in English language.It would be better to start here in the University level.Otherwise Taiwan would be a closed community.Teachers from different background may not be able
17、 to come and be part of Taiwan.Globalization is a hot topic in recent years which drives the international communities to come together.If Taiwanwants to be part of the globalization and exchange ideas andScholars,it must prepare itself.1010Currently,Taiwan attracts many overseas Chinese students fr
18、om countries like Hong Kong,Malaysia,Singapore,and Indonesia.Further,it is also offering scholarships to foreign students comingfor graduate studies here in Taiwan.Number of foreign students coming to Taiwan to pursue higher studies or college degree could increase,if it decides to useEnglish as an
19、instructional language.It could attract more studentsfrom other countries too.It could be internationally known withmany scholars working and doing research here in Taiwan.1111I have also talked to some of the teachers who are using English as an instructional language here in Fu Jen University.They
20、 feel that the students are not prepared adequately to be ableto understand the courses taught in English.Perhaps some introductory courses to prepare the students to attend courses in English could be offered.Even though I am suppose to teach technical writing course,if the studentsare not adequate
21、ly prepared with writing skills,I may end up teachingbasic grammar rather than technical writing.Thus,using Englishas an instructional language may not be able to teach in-depth knowledgein a subject.However,this could be overcome as the number of years passes by.The future generation might get used
22、 to when we plunge into without any fear.1212Any country would like to preserve its culture and heritage.Language is an important part of preserving ones own tradition.If in the higher education level English is used as an instructionallanguage,it could slowly loose its long lasting tradition and cu
23、lture.If the courses are offered in English,students may find it difficult to grasp quickly all the concepts and the scientific techniques presented in the field of science and Engineering during the semester.In the beginning,number of students going for higher education may decrease if English is u
24、sed as an instructional language.If the trend continues,it could eventually increase the standard of education.1313Several faculty members who are working in our University and other institutions in Taiwan have excellent record of doing research and publications.They graduated from excellent universities from Taiwan.If they are asked to use English as an instructionallanguage,they might find it difficult to teach in English.Many such scholars might find it difficult to adjust for a suddenchange.14141515
