32、rds can be divided into two main categories(类).Functional words express relationships and have only one unchanging meaning in any given context.They include conjunctions(n.连词),prepositions(n.介词),articles(冠词),and pronouns(n.代名词).Content words carry the meaning of a sentence and are subject to various

33、 interpretations(解释).They include nouns,verbs adjectives,and adverbsBoth functional words and content(满意的,满足的)words are necessary,but your effectiveness as a communicator depends on your ability to choose the right content words for your message.Denotation(象征预示象征预示)and connotation(隐含意义隐含意义)Content w

34、ords have both a denotative(explicit,specific)meaning and a connotative(implicit,associative)meaning.Denotation meaning is the literal(字面字面意义的意义的),or dictionary meaning.Connotative meaning includes all the associations and feeling evoked(唤起唤起引起引起)by the word.However,some words have much stronger con

35、notation than others.In business communication,avoid using terms that are high in connotative(隐含的)(隐含的)meaning.Business communicators avoid words with negative or multiple connotations.Abstraction and concreteness(抽象和具体)(抽象和具体)An abstract word expresses a concept,quality,or characteristic.A concrete

36、(具体的)(具体的)word stands for something you can touch or see.You might assume that concrete words are always better than abstract words,because they are more precise(精确的),but you would sometimes be wrong.In business communication,use concrete,specific terms whenever possible;use abstractions only when n

43、than others.You can emphasize these key ideas through your sentence style.One obvious technique is to give important points the most space.When you want to call attention to a thought,use extra words to describe it.For instanceConsider this sentence:“The chairperson of the board called for a vote of

44、 the shareholders.”To emphasize the importance of the chairperson,you might describe her more fully:“Having considerable experience in corporate takeover battles,the chairperson of the board called for a vote of the shareholders.”You can increase the emphasis even more by adding a separate,short sen

45、tence to augment the first:”The chairperson of the board called for a vote of the shareholders.She has considerable experience in corporate takeover battles.”You can also call attention to a thought by making it the subject of the sentence.In the following example,the emphasis is on the person:“I ca

46、n write letters much more quickly by using a computer.”However,by changing the subject,the computer takes center stage:”The computer helps me write letters much more quickly.”Another way to emphasize an idea is to place it at either the beginning or the end of a sentence:Less Emphatic:We cutting the

47、 price to stimulate demand.More Emphatic:To stimulate demand,we are cutting the price.In complex sentence,the placement of the dependent clause hinges on the relationship between the ideas expressed.If you want to emphasize the idea,put the dependent clause at the end of the sentence(the most emphat

48、ic position)or at the beginning(the second most emphatic position).If you want to downplay the idea,bury the dependent clause within the sentence.e.g.sMost Emphatic:The electronic parts are manufactured in Mexico,which has lower wage rates than the United States.Emphatic:Because wage rates are lower
