2、al dragons and the sons of the heaven.Thus the beds they sleep on are called the dragon beds,the throne called the dragon seat,and the emperors ceremonial dresses called the dragon robes.Also dragons can be seen on the buildings in the imperial palace.Dragon screens are an important part of this dra
3、gon culture.The dragon is a symbol of imperial power.Traditionally the dragons are considered as the governors of rain falls in Chinese culture.They have the power to decide where and when to have rain falls.The kings of the water dragons live in the dragon palaces under the oceans.The dragon also p
4、lays an important part in Chinese Festivals.The dragon dance has a long history,which was already a popular event during the Song Dynasty(960-1279 AD).The Dragon Boat Festival is almost purely dragon-related festival,which becomes popular international events now.There are many Chinese stories about
5、 the dragon.There is even a very famous Chinese idiom,Lord Yes Love of Dragons,which means professed love of what one really fears.Here is the story behind the idiom.Lord Ye loved dragons deeply.He had dragons everywhere and he was thinking about dragons all the time.His love of dragons moved a real
6、 dragon,so the dragon came to visit him one day.When he saw the real dragon,he was frightened to death.Recently there has been a heated discussion on whether we should continue to use the dragon as the symbol for our China.Some claim that the dragon is no longer a suitable symbol for China.Whereas o
7、thers dont think so.A professor Wu in Shanghai who holds the view that the dragon is no good a symbol gives the following reasons.Firstly,the dragon is an evil animal in western cultures as we can learn from many western moviesSecondly,with Chinas entry to WTO and the successful bid for holding the
8、2008 Olympic Games,China should keep up with the high pace of the world.Therefore we shouldnt always uphold the outmoded ideas and replace the ferocious kind of animal with something gentleAnother professor in Xinjiang who supports Wu thinks the dragon is an imagined animal which does not exist in r
9、eal world while the symbol in most other countries are all real animals.He thus thinks China should learn from America and the European countries and give up the dragon as the totem worship.All Chinese people think we are descendants of dragons.In the minds of many people,dragons are lucky animals w
10、hich can bring favorable weather.Even now,people like to perform the dragon lantern or to race dragon boats in the most important traditional festivals.In one word,dragon is so important in the Chinese culture that it has become one part of our life and has gone to the blood of our nation.So if we give up our own spiritual foundation and change the symbol to cater for the tastes of westerners,we would not only be looked down upon by others,but also lose our own identity in the stage of world.Thank you for seeing
