11、acles of segregation and the chains ofdiscrimination.One hundred years later,the Negro lives on a lonely islandof poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.One hundred years later,the Negro is still languished inthe corners of American society and finds himself an e*ile inhis own l

12、and.And so weve come here today to dramatize a shamefulcondition.In a sense weve come to our nations capital to cash a check.When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificentwords of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,they were signing a promissory note to which every Ameri

13、can wasto fall heir.This note was a promise that all men,yes,black men aswell as white men,would be guaranteed the unalienable Rightsof Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.It is obvious today that America has defaulted on thispromissory note,insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.第 3 页

15、nthe great vaults of opportunity of this nation.And so,weve come to cash this check,a check that will giveus upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind Americaof the fierce urgency of Now.This is no time to engage in the lu*ury of

16、cooling off orto take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.Now is the timeto rise fromthe dark and desolatevalleyof segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.Now is the timeto lift our nationfrom the quicksandsofracial injustice to the so

17、lid rock of brotherhood.Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of Godschildren.It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgencyof the moment.This sweltering summer of the Negros legitimatediscontent will not pauntil there is an invigorating autumn offreedom and equality.Nineteen s

20、ing our rightful place,we must not be guiltyof wrongful deeds.Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom bydrinking from the cup of bitterneand hatred.We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane ofdignity and discipline.We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate intophysi

21、cal violence.Again and again,we must rise to the majestic heights ofmeeting physical force with soul force.The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negrocommunity must not lead us to a distrust of all white people,for many of our white brothers,as evidenced by their presencehere today,have
