1、Traditional Indian weddings are a grand affair and involves lavish preparations.The number of people attending a wedding could be anywhere between 500-1000.Here,the sanctitude of the ceremony is preserved through numerous traditional rituals and is accompanied by lots of entertainment,fun,colorful d

2、resses,jewelry,lip-smacking foods,music and dance.Most of the basic ceremonies which we are going to discuss in the following sections.In ancient India,when holding wedding,all families should attend it,including brothers,sisters and direct relative.In addition,their mothers have important task to c

3、omplete in the wedding banquet.Before few days of wedding,priest will go to the brides home to make a pray,suggesting that the wedding be hold smoothly.The brides parents will hold a small party to welcome the family and relatives of the groom.Usually,the bride and groom are not permitted to meet wi

4、th each other during this period,because that may bring disaster to their marriage.nClothesThe bride usually wears red and white wedding dress with golden edge,because the white is for purity and the red is the symbol of wealth and progenies.Whats more,the bride will wear many golden accessary and j

5、ewels.As for the groom,he wears white clothes,and the coat is shirt with golden edge and the pants is baggy.nPre-Wedding RitualsThe main wedding ceremony is preceded by two major events.One is the engagement ceremony and the other is the Mehendi or Sangeet ceremony.The engagement ceremony takes plac

6、e on an auspicious date fixed by the elders of the family after consultation with the priest.As compared to the wedding,this is a small affair which is attended mostly by close family members and friends of the girl and the boy.During this ceremony,the couple exchange wedding rings.It is followed by

7、 exchange of sweets between them as well as the members of both families.The occasion concludes with music,dance.nMehendi/Sangeet is another fun-filled event that takes place at the brides house just a day before the actual wedding.On this day,henna(mehendi)is applied on the brides palms and feet wi

8、th intricate patterns.Other women attending the occasion also get mehendi done on their hands.This occasion is also celebrated with song,dance and merriment.wedding ceremonynThe Wedding Dayn1.Welcome the Baraat(The arrival of the groom and his family).The groom arrives at the wedding on a horse,acco

9、mpanied by his closest friends and family members.The large procession includes lots of singing and dancing.This signifies the grooms and his familys happiness in accepting the new bride.n2.Have Milni(meeting of the bride and grooms families).The brides family with garlands and traditional Indian sw

10、eets welcomes the groom and his family.Milni is an important tradition where the grooms family in honored by the brides familyn3.Get devoted by performing Ganesha Puja.Before the ceremony begins,a Ganesh Puja is performed for good luck.Ganesha is the destroyer of all obstacles.The ceremony involves

11、both the brides and the grooms primary family members.n4.Call the kanya through the Kanya Aagaman(arrival of the bride).The bride is usually led by her father to the marriage altar,which signifies that the brides maternal side approves of the union.The bride and the groom are separated by a white cl

12、oth and not allowed to see one another yet.n5.Let the garland speak during the Jai Mala(exchanging of the garlands).Once the bride approaches the mandap,(area where the wedding rituals take place)the white cloth is dropped.The bride and the groom then exchange floral garlands.These garlands are to s

13、ignify their acceptance of one another.n6.Kanyadaan.At this point in the ritual,the father of the bride pours sacred water in her hand and then places her hand in the grooms hand.This ritual signifies the father officially giving away his daughter.Then the grooms sister usually ties the end of his s

14、carf to the brides sari with betelnuts,copper coins and rice.These items symbolize unity,prosperity and happiness for the couple.The knot in specific is meant to represent the eternal bond that comes with marriage.n7.Panigharani(Vows).During this ritual,the groom takes his brides hand.This might be

15、the first time the couple has physically touched one another.During this ritual the husband accepts his bride and vows to her and her parents that he will take care of and protect his bride for the rest of her life.n8.Do the rounds known as Saptapadi(seven circles around the fire).At this point in t

16、he ceremony the couple walks around the fire seven times.The bride and the groom make seven vows together then pray to the Gods that these vows be fulfilled.nEach round has its own significance.In the first three rounds,the groom follows the bride which signifies that the bride will take charge in t

17、he earlier part of their life and in the next four rounds,the groom leads which means he would lead in the later part.n9.the groom put sindoor or vermilion on the brides parting of the hair,which signifies she has been married.n10.Fill the neck of the bride through Mangalsutra Dharanam.The mangalsut

18、ra is an auspicious thread that the groom ties around the brides neck.It is a sacred necklace that the groom ties around the brides neck on their wedding day.After he ties this necklace around his brides neck,he gives her the official status of being his wife.The bride is expected to wear this neckl

19、ace as long as her marriage lasts.This necklace is a symbol of marriage,mutual love and commitment of the bride and groom to one another.nPost Wedding Ceremonies in India nOut of the many Post Wedding Ceremonies in India,some important ones are Vidaai,Dwar-Rokai,Reception,Griha Pravesh,Mooh Dikhai a

20、nd Pag Phera.Vidaai In Indian MarriagenThe ritual of vidaai is marked as one of the most emotional aspect of the wedding festivities.It is the formal departure of the bride from her parents home.However,just as we know that every ritual in a Hindu wedding has an element of fun to it.During the Vidaa

21、i ceremony,the sisters of the bride ask for money from the groom,for the shoes they had stolen,prior to when the wedding rituals started in the mandap.After much argument(in a good sense),the sisters are presented with either gold/silver ring or cash money.nThereafter,the bride finally takes steps a

22、head,leaving her house and embracing her friends and family members.According to the Hindu tradition,as the bride steps out of the house,she throws back five handfuls of rice over her head,in a way that it falls on the person standing behind her,as a symbol of prosperity and wealth.nThe custom of th

23、rowing rice signifies that the bride is paying back or returning,whatever her parents have given her in all these years of her stay with them and wishes for prosperity to always flourish in the house she is leaving behind.Just when the bride and the groom sit in the car and its starts,the brides bro

24、thers and cousins pushes the car from behind,signifying that they have given her a push ahead to start a new life with her husband.After the last car starts,money is thrown on the road to discard the evil.Mostly younger sister accompanies the bride to her new home to give her moral support.Dwar Roka

25、i CeremonynDwar Rokka ceremony is largely performed in the north Indian weddings.It is an important ceremony as per traditional Indian wedding rituals.Dwar rokai ceremony is held when newly wed couple arrives at grooms home.All the relatives offer couple a warm welcome but the grooms sister doesnt a

26、llow them to enter at home.She will only allow the couple to enter at home after getting some gifts or cash from her brother.After that,the couple gives her attractive gift and makes way for going to home.Griha Pravesh CeremonynAt the grooms house,everyone is standing at the entrance of home,particu

27、larly the ladies,to welcome wholeheartedly the newly married couple.When the bride and groom arrive at the home,the ladies perform the ceremony of Griha Pravesh for the bride.In the north Indian wedding,the Griha Pravesh ceremony maintains a huge significance.In fact,it is the traditional Indian way

28、 of welcoming the newly wed bride.Griha Pravesh CeremonynDuring the Griha Pravesh ceremony,bride pushes a jar or kalash containing rice by her right toe at the entrance.After that,she enters within the house by stepping her right leg first.The ceremony of Griha Pravesh illustrates that the family of

29、 groom has welcomed the bride from the bottom of the heart and accepted her as one of the integral member of their family.At some places in India,the bride also tells her husband name at the entrance and then enters to the home.Hence,the post-wedding Griha Pravesh ceremony is the medium in which the

30、 bride puts first step at her in-laws and starts a new passage in her life.Mooh Dikhai CeremonynMooh Dikhai is one of the traditional post-wedding ceremonies held in many parts of the country.The mother-in-law,in particular,offers amazing gifts to the bride as the gesture of welcoming her.The other

31、relatives of groom family also present some attractive gifts to the bride.Some of the Mooh Dikhai gifts can be gold or diamond jewelry,sari or cash.In India,presenting the gifts to new bride at this ceremony is considered as Shagun that ought to be offered to her by the family of groom.Pag Phera Cer

32、emonynOne of the most important post-wedding ceremonies is Pag phera.It is being followed in all types of Indian weddings.During the Pag Phera ceremony,the bride has to stay at her parental home for two or three days.But before that,the brides brother generally comes to take back her to his home.Whe
