3、nd were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.The first few days at her new school hadnt been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didnt know, and it seemed like the students hadnt even noticed her. Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes

4、.On the day of the grand opening, Mei Meis parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her fami

5、ly.At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Meis age. As she filled their glasses, Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.Mei Meis mother found her soon after, in

6、the kitchen loading the dishwasher.“Honey, what are you doing back here? Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Two red marks suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said prou

11、dly, “Well, I willbuy this pair.”Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her ofresponsibility. How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she

12、put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a pair of new boots. Her foot and ankle lookedlovely. 17、t was relaxing, thought Freddie.After breakfast his mother suggested he go out and build a snowman. Freddie wasnt too sure. He didnt really like the cold and the snow. Hed rather stay inside and play video games.“You can play afterward, but how about going outside for a little bit? Its good to get s

18、ome fresh air, and who knows, you might even enjoy yourself.” Freddie unwillingly put on the warm clothes and headed outside.Standing alone in the front yard, with the cold wind blowing, was not Freddies idea of a good time. Knowing his mom meant what she said, the boy sighed, thinking the quicker h

19、e completed his snowman, the faster he could go back inside to his video games. He set to work packing up some snow into a large ball.Moments later, he saw one of his friends appearing from his house up the street. Dion waddled(蹒跚) out in his big snow trousers and heavy overcoat. He waved to Freddie

On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasnt very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!Heiss was charme

23、d. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.It would be difficult, but Heiss h

24、ad a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and h

25、elped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girls family. A few days

26、passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his

37、 As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip Ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldnt admit it, but al

38、l that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmers build.It didnt take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place-and then third-and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat

39、down at the table with him. “Mike, we all love ice cream, but its not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe its time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didnt perform well. His father offered to go

40、 running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. She went straight towards the twins table and put the plate on their table, saying the cookies were specially prepared for friends by her parents restaurant. Amazed, the twi

44、ns had their mouth open, for they had never seen Mei Mei as a friend. Mei Mei added that she was new here and wondered if they could be her tour guides on weekends. The twins nodded, sincerely inviting her to join them. Over chatting, Me Mei found they shared the same interestmaking pots.
