2、ood of bunch of “grotesques” suffered from metal abuse leading a life in America Society in a wave of industrialization but also presented his own unique composition skills and deep ideological connotation. Therefore, Anderson and his Winesburg, Ohio holds a special place in the history of American
3、literature. In this paper, a research was made on the subject of Winesburg, Ohio by firstly making a brief introduction on the writing background of this piece, then having a discussion about the theme and main idea of it and at last making an analysis on the influence of Winesburg, Ohio. 1. The int
4、roduction of the author, masterpiece and writing backgroundSherwood Anderson was a writer that played a contextual role in American literal world in 1920s-30s and the one who successfully warded off the social mundanity with his own characteristic. “Anderson is father of traditional literature who w
5、ill be passed on generation after generation by us and our successors” said the American famous writer William Faulkner in 1956 (1956). America developed drastically in later half of the 19th century. The national market unified by the United States was started to form at the end of American Civil W
6、ar in 1866; millions of immigrants were no longer suffering from lack of manpower shortage in American economic development, which had promoted the creation and application of new technology and new craft. Development of western regions not only expanded the territory of the United States but also u
7、shered in a massive liberal economic market that drove the enhancement of agriculture, industry and transportation industry; the development and technology of division of labor had significantly improved labor productivity. Thus, with the rapid development of economy, America has become an one-up in
8、dustrial power in the world and an industrial power of capitalism transformed from the agricultural country before the First World War. As a product of the age, the economic phenomena such as urbanization, agricultural industrialization and communication modernization etc. in Winesburg, Ohio are all
9、 without exception in line with the current social reality (2011). The novel is telling a story of a bunch of grotesques living in seclusion in a boring dull city that every days life always seems so prosaic there at the first glance. Every one of them wants a truth. But the truths are numerous and
10、all seemingly beautiful. Before young journalist Jorge Willard left his hometown and is heading to the big city to seek for glorious future, tons of phantoms showed up like the Rondo; innocent pastor, shopgirl who idled away her youth in the shop, depressed hotel landlady, mysterious doctor, ugly te
11、legrapher, single woman teacher, male teacher who was misunderstood by others and deported and the god-believing landlord who wanted to start his own businessgrotesques of all forms all tell their own one-of-kind life, like a piece of poetry and as well like a dream. 2. The Analysis of the Subject F
12、rom Four Aspect2.1 Main Idea:This story describes a world of grotesques all with a distorted heart who makes them a bunch of undisputed freaks in the eyes of normal guys under the ruthless extrusion of the reality. They are clinging to a truth in life, unable to extricating themselves but in the end
13、, the truth they believe in turn out to be a fallacy. This article states the common heritage of human beings concerned by the public through describing the “town” and “grotesques” finding the way to realize self-atonement in humanity to them adapted to the development of modern society and the othe
14、r way around (2015). 2.2 Sexual RelationsThe description of bisexual image and relations in Winesburg, Ohio is unfolded under a specific cultural background. America in the second half of the 19th century, delineated in the story, was at the height of power and splendor in the process of “urbanizati
15、on”. The concerns of economic development started to target at Midwest. Such change is reflected in the change of bisexual image and relations in the new and old culture (2004). 2.3 Characterization: Winesburg, Ohio builds up an image of a series of ordinary but real people living in the small town
16、of Ohio of the United States. The characters in the story are all with misshapened personalities and eccentric behaviors. Aside from the freaks, there is a central person named Jorge Willard has been a leading threading throughout the story. The image of Jorge is actually the actual presence of the
17、experience and emotion variety of the writer himself. .Therefore, compared with Jorge as a reference, the odd features of the others seem more protuberant (1994). 2.4 Artistic characteristicA very funny and symbolic phenomenon is that this production is a combination of full-length novel and short s
18、tories from the perspective of form. If it is a full-length novel, it is not characterized as it is supposed to be, the featured plot, time sequence and contradiction development; if it is just a short story, the countless ties between each story are there. Winesburg, Ohio although adopts the form o
19、f short-story, the characters thereof have a common point which is loneliness (2005). 3. ConclusionThe advent of this masterpiece played a transitional and landmark role in the development of American literature, particularly the development of American short story; its object, content, composition
20、structure and innovative method etc. has pioneered a new dimension of American modernist novels. After reading the whole book, we again try to understand such blear fantasy of Jorge Willard who left his hometown with his dream, maybe you will read off the painstaking efforts of the author: this is a
21、 start of a young man who seeks for his dream, which is deemed as the hope for the “grotesques” of the town and city and also the firm answer made by the author about whereabout of human societythe power for human development and renovation will finally depend on the mankind itself.
