、ys. In the practice of it, we compose more than just the frame. Often, it seems to me that the frame composes us. We create and then recreate, form and reform. And we are recreated and reformed too. The process of it teaches us to notice and appreciate things. And to observe the tiny, obvious things

、 which have been relegated to being so peripheral that they become obscure, in a sense, obviousless. When these things are brought back into the focus of our attention, we find ourselves filled with a sense of amazement and wonder. Sometimes, we are shocked into wakefulness. How did we not see that

、before? Now that we have seen it, can we continue to ignore it as we have for so long? WIPA 2018 has given me many new, amazing sights and insights about the world we live in and share. It has reminded me once more of the nature of light, life and creation, visible in each frame, in its most element

、al forms. And yet, as the creators of this platform, what we have seen (I speak for the judges from this and the previous edition) compels me to voice certain concerns. Photographers must be cautious and careful not to upset a very delicate balance by being uninformed, uncaring and overstepping thei

、r bounds. The first, and most significant rule with all genres of photography, but most pertinent in wildlife photography, always has been and remains. Do no harm. Images where a creature or habitat has been disturbed, even inadvertently, is grounds for immediate disqualification. Judges instantly s

、pot images in which this has happened. There are methods and means to approach a subject in a manner that is safe, and it calls for guidance and research. Especially in India, I have noticed that experts are ever eager to share their knowledge on this. So there can be no excuses. With cellphone came

、ras becoming more versatile, photographers have entered cellphone images into WIPA, more so this year than in the last. While a well conceived cellphone photo can be quite appealing, more often than not, these entries have been disheartening in the sheer callousness of approach. Photos of nesting bi

、rds or animals have been generally disallowed in wildlife photography contests. But with the wide angle lenses of cellphones, some photographers have resorted to moving within a few inches away. With this kind of intrusion, hatchlings are very likely to starve to death after that because the parents

、 are not coming back. Numerous other instances of this sort of carelessness by participants have prompted me to write about it, and wonder if WIPA is, in some way, encouraging such behaviour. As it is, there have been many well known instances of how destructive the selfie culture has been to both h

、umans and wildlife alike. Of course, the technology, or platforms like WIPA, play no part in how irrationally or irresponsibly humans behave. But we have the means to educate or deter. The next edition will include the strictest rules, plainly but emphatically stating this. Finally, as photographers

、, we must know that conservation goes beyond protecting the wilderness. It begins at home. Reducing our own carbon footprint and informing others are equally essential. It is also quite easily achieved with minimal effort. A few simple changes in habits, lifestyle, and taking a few basic measures at
