1、Songs in Praise of Victory and Peaceo commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Victory ofthe World Anti-Fascist War，the Sichuan Provincial PeoplesAssociation for Friendship with Foreign Countries（SIFA）helda concert，featuring songs of the former Soviet Union，inChengdu on May 8.Among some 400 Chinese a
2、nd foreignattendees were a goodwill delegation from New Zealand led byMr.Bill Willmott，Cobi Yanovsky，Deputy Consul General ofIsrael to Chengdu，as well as Russian，American，British，French，Danish，Ukrainian，Kazakhstani，Canadian，Peruvian，Australian，Ugandan and Zambian people living andworking in Sichuan.
3、In her speech before the concert，SIFA President LuoYubin said，“Today is the 70th anniversary of Victory in theworld anti-fascist war.The havoc of war brought horribledisaster to the worlds people.China and the Soviet Union asthe main battlefields in Asia and Europe，respectively，madegreat contributio
4、ns to final victory.“The Soviet Union sent an air force volunteer team toChina to aid China（against the invading Japanese）.More than200 pilots lost their lives.”The team leader Kulishenko actuallyperished in Sichuan（now Wanxian County of Chongqing）in1939 after shooting down six Japanese warplanes.Sh
5、e went on：“It is to remember history，recollect thememory of the martyrs，cherish peace and create the futurethat we solemnly commemorate this anniversary today so as towork hand in hand to safeguard the fruits of that victory andensure world peace.”At the concert，Chengdu High-Tech District XiaojiaheC
6、ommunity Chorus，Chengdu Russian Folk Song Chorus andthe Art College Choir of Sichuan University sang with greatpassion the songs of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Unionand Russian folk songs including Sacred War；The Song ofYoung Communist Leaguers；Bravely，Comrades，Keep Step；Katyusha，as well a
7、s the Chinese song Song of the Guerrillas，the Italian song Bella Ciao and some Ukrainian and NewZealand songs.The songs of the Patriotic War of the SovietUnion are deeply loved by the Chinese people.When themelody of Katyusha rose，people in the audience and thechoruses on the stage sang together.It
8、was such a stirringscene.Foreign friends who have watched the performance spokehighly of the concert.Mr.Bill Willmott，an old friend of theChinese people who is now over 80，said that the concert tookhim back to the days of the resistance war when he had lived inChengdu and experienced the bombing of
9、Huaxiba by Japaneseairplanes and he deeply felt the tremendous sufferingsJapanese invaders had brought to the Chinese people.New Zealand had also participated in the Pacific Waragainst the Japanese militarists and made sacrifices.The peopleof both New Zealand and China shouldered the responsibility
10、toeducate their younger generation not to forget history and towork together to safeguard world peace.Mrs.Delf，a judicial assistant from Oregon whose fatherhad been born in Yibin，Sichuan，had also endured theanti-Japanese war.She was especially deeply touched by thepassionate singing of Sacred War performed by Sichuanuniversity students.The concert was staged after more than four months ofpreparation and rehearsal.As a people-to-people culturalexchange activity of Sichuan Province，it has helped to deepenfriendship between the people of Sichuan and those of othercountries.
