1、Lesson3 An unknown goddess 无名女神Some time ago ,an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea.An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini. The city an one time mast have been prosperous,for it enjoyed a high level
2、 of civilization .House_often three storeys high_were built of stone .They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls. The city was even equipped with a drainage ,for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets. The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place
3、 of worship from the fifteenth century B.C.until Roman times .In the most sacred room of the temple ,clay fragments of fifteen statue were found . Each of these represented a goddess and had ,at one time ,been painted .The body of one statue was found among remains dating from the fifteenth Century
4、B.C,Its missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century B.C.This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved.It was very old and precious even then.When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments ,the were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a
5、 very modern_looking woman .She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips .She was wearing a full_length skirt which swept the ground .Despite her great age,she was very graceful indeed ,but,so far,the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.Today well learn a story is

22、n the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments ,the were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern_looking woman.此句中的to find that .从句用来说明产生amaze的原因,这类动词不定式常用及作补语的形容词之后。.turned out to 是“证明是,原来是,结果是,后来成为为系动词,其后的动词不定式,可省略,直接将主语补足语放在其后。Eg:He has turned out (to be )a professor. 他后来
23、成为一名很了不起教授。.modern-looking 为合成形容词,由形容词/副词+现在分词,常见的有:easy-going 好相处的good-looking 好看的well-meaning 善意的hard-looking 工作努力的(15) .She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips stood 为系动词,three feet high 是表语,当动词后的形容词,名词等被用来描述和说明句子主语而非动词所表示的动作时,这样的动词称为系动词,除be动词外还有:(16) .he was wearing a full_len
