Analysis of the teaching material and students1.1 Analysis of the teaching materialThe selected teaching material is from Book 3 of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press(New Standard) Module11 Unit 1. And the
2、title of module 11 is “Way of life”. Actually, the topic of this module is about customs and traditions in China and Western countries. Unit One is a listening and speaking class. In this unit, Lingling and her friends talk about birthday traditions in China and in the West as well as Chinese Spring
3、 Festival traditions. From their conversation, and Wang Huis introduction of traditions in England in Unit 2, we will see the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.【What】The theme of this unit is about traditions and customs. In the first part of the conversation, they talk about t
4、he birthday traditions like when to open and how to accept a gift. In the second part they talk about Chinese Spring Festival traditions like what we must/mustnt do.In this lesson, it focuses on introducing the traditions and customs with the help of modal verbs. But at the same time paying attentio
5、n to tones and functions of the everyday English and how the conversation starts, continues and ends is also quite important.【Why】Since the topic is closely related to students daily life. Students may show great interest in it. And through the comparison of different traditions and customs in diffe
6、rent countries, students cultural awareness will be gradually aroused. Students may learn to understand and respect other cultures.After this lesson, they can use the modal verbs to talk about the customs or rules in their daily life. And at the same time, students can learn many useful everyday Eng
7、lish expressions like “Thats interesting!” “Perfect!” “What a surprise!”to express their own feelings or opinions.【 How 】 This is a listening and speaking class in the first unit of Module 11. The conversation starts with Lingling receiving a birthday gift from three friends of different countries.
8、When to open and how to accept the gift naturally become a topic among them. Linglings American friend Betty thinks the differences between Chinese customs and Western customs are very interesting. And she wants to know more. So Lingling and Daming introduce Spring Festival traditions to their Weste
9、rn friends Anyway, the Spring Festival is still a month away. So they stop talking about Spring Festival and decide to celebrate Linglings birthday.They continue the dialogue through expressing their feelings , opinions or question immediately. While they are talking about the traditions and customs
10、 in China and in the West, the modal verbs and the everyday English are naturally used inthis dialogue.1.2 Analysis of the studentsStudents in Grade 8 have accumulated a bunch of words and expressions about gifts and traditions. They are familiar with the topic and are interested in it. However, the
11、y cant talk about customs and traditions freely which is what I need to help them to improve during my teaching. Moreover, the usage of modal verbs and functions or tones of everyday English are not very easy for them to learn.In the class, students in Grade 8 can listen to the teachers carefully an
12、d participate the activities bravely. They are curious about new things and have a strong desire to learn better. But sometimes they cant express their ideas correctly or systematically.2.
