3、heLishanMountain,abranchrangeoftheQinlingRanges,andstands1,256metreshigh.Itiscoveredwithpinesandcypresses,lookingverymuchlikealikeadarkgreengallopinghorsefromalongdistance.SoithasthenameoftheLishanMountain(Limeansablackhorse).TheTangdynastyEmperorXuanZongandhisfavouritelady,YangGuiFeiusedtomaketheir

7、tothebottomoftheRoaringDragonWatersidePavilionsituatedattheupperendoftheJadeCauseway,andobligedhimtoexercisecontrolovertheyoung.TheNine-BendCorridorwestoftheNineDragonPoolleadsdirectlytotheMarbleBoat,whichresemblesadragonboatonthewatersurface.IntheMarbleBoatliestheNineDragonTang(theNineDragonHotSpri
8、ngwhereEmperorXuanZongusedtotakebaths).Attheheadofhiscourtladiesandhundredsofhisofficials,hewouldcometotheHuanqingPalacetospendhiswinterdaysinOctoberoftheLunarcalendarandreturntoChanganCityastheyeardrewtoitsclose.TheNineDragonHotSpringwasoriginallybuiltwithcrystaljade,whosesurfacewasdecoratedwiththe
9、carvingsoffish,dragons,birdsandflowers.Inittwinlotusflowersalsocarvedwithwhitejadecouldbeseenaswell.Thespringwaterwelledfromthebreakofanearthenjar,andspouteduptothelotusflowers.HencethenameLotusFlowerTang(theLotusFlowerHotSpring).TheGuiFeiBathingPoolwaswhereYangGuiFei,EmperorXuanZongsfavoritelady,us
10、edtotakebath.Itwasoriginallybuiltwithwhitejade,andinitscenterabloomingflowerspoutedwaterlikeaspring.ThepoollookedverymuchlikeaChinesefloweringcrabapple;HenceitsnametheChineseFloweringCrabappleHotSpringortheLotusHotSpring.LadyYangusedtomakeastayinthispaviliontoseesightsortoairherhairafterabath.Theref
11、ore,itwasnamedtheHairAiringPavilion.Whetherthesunwasrisingorsetting,thepavilionwasaglowwithsunshine;hencethenametheFlyingRoseatePavilion.SouthwestoftheGuiFeiBathingPoolstandsabrick-builtpavilion.OnitsheadthreebigChinesecharacters“XiJiaLou”(FineSunset-BathedPavilion)areinscribedaccordingtothemodeloft
12、hemostcelebratedaccordingtothemodelofthemostcelebratedChinesecalligrapher,YuYouRen,hereisthesourceofthespringwater.Atthisspatherearefourhotsprings.Theyhaveanhourlyflowof112tons,andaconstanttemperatureof43C.Thespringwatercontainslime,sodiumcarbonate,sodiumsulphateandotherminerals,whichmakesitsuitable
13、forbathingandconsiderabletreatmentofquiteafewdiseasessuchasdermatosis,rheumatism,arthritisandmuscularpain.TheFineSunset-BathedPavilionmarksthefirstsourceofthespringwater,whichwasdiscoveredsome3,000yearsago,roughlyintheWesternZhouDynasty.Itswaterflowaverages25tonsperhour.Takeupthestepseastofthesource
14、ofhotsprings,youwillgraduallyseetheFive-RoomPavilionwhereChiangKaishekmadeatemporarystayduringtheXianIncident.TheXianIncidenttookplaceonDecember12,1936,anditisalsoknownastheDoubleTwelfthIncident.AftertheIncidentofSeptember18,1936,theJapaneseimperialistsseizedthethreeprovincesnortheastofChina,andinte
15、nsifiedtheirinvasionofNorthChina.ThiswastheverymomentvitaltotheChinesenation.YetChiangKaichekpersisteddoggedlyincarryingouthisreactionarypolicy“domestictranquilityisamustfortheresistanceagainstJapaneseinvades,”andcommandedtheNortheastArmyandNorthwestArmy,respectivelyheadedbyZhangXueliangandYangHuche
16、ng,toattacktheShaanxi-Gansu-NingxiaBorderRegion.InspiredbyourPartyspolicy“letusstoptheinternalwarandunittoresisttheJapaneseaggressors,”thosetwogeneralsmadetoChiangKaishektheproposalofformingaunitedfrontwiththeCommunistPartyfortheresistance.Notonlydidherejecttheproposal,butflewtoXiantoschemethe“suppr
17、essionoftheCommunistParty.”Andtheslaughterofthepatrioticyouth.Outofpatriotism,ZhangandYangstartedthefamousXianIncident.VeryearlyonthemorningofDecember12,1936theIncidentwasimpending.ZhangXueliang,togetherwithYangHuchengorderedasquadofbodyguardstosurroundtheHuaqingPool.Theyfoughtafiercebattlethere,and
18、wipedoutChiangsbodyguardsinonevigorouseffort.ThesoundoffiringcametoChiangKaishek,andhewassoterrifiedthathecreptoutofthewindowwithhisnightgownandslippersonly.Whatsmore,hehurthisspinalbone,andlostoneofhisslipperswhilecrossingoverthebackwall.HestaggeredupLishanMountain,andhidhimselfbehindastoneinthecre
19、vicehalfwayonit.ThosebravesoldiersbegantosearchthemountainimmediatelywhentheyrushedintotheFive-RoomPaviliontofindthatChiangshatandclotheswerestillthereandthathisquiltremainedwarm.IntheendtheyfoundChiangKaishek,andthusescortedhimtoXian.Inordertoavoidacivilwarandtrytestablishanationalunitedfrontforthe
20、resistanceagainstJapan,MaoZedongonbehalfoftheC.C.P.C.insistedonapeacefulsettlementoftheIncident.Therefore,adelegationheadedbyZhouEnlaiwassenttoXian.ZhouEnlaiandhissuitedidalargeamountofworkthere,tookeverythingpossibleintoconsideration,andultimatelyforcedChiangKaishektoaccepttheproposalbyhistwogenera
21、ls.OnDecember25,Chiangwasfreed,andflewbacktoNanjing.TheXianIncidentwassopeacefullysettled.ThepeacefulsettlementoftheIncidentputanendtotheinternalwarwhichhadlastedfortenyears,andacceleratedtheformationanddevelopmentofthenationalunitedfrontfortheanti-Japanesedrive.Moreover,itshowedthattheco-operativer
22、elationshipsbetweentheCommunistandNationalistsarrivedatanewstage.ItmarkedagreatturningpointinmodernChinesehistory.Intheyearof1946theKMTgovernmenthada“NationalRejuvenationPavilion”builtnearthecrevicewhereChiangKaishekhadhiddenhimselfintheIncident.Itwasalsocalled“VitalEnergyPavilion”.Afterthenationall
23、iberationitwasrenamed“CatchingChiangPavilion”.ClosebythepavilionstandsawoodenboardwhichcarriesabriefintroductiontotheXianIncident.Ironchainsandringsinthecreviceseastofthepavilion,bywhichvisitorscanclimbuptotakealookatChiangKaisheksshelter.UpthewindingpatheastoftheFive-Room-Pavilionyouwillcatchsighto
24、fabridge-likeconstruction.Itshinesregularlywithamyriadofeveningsunraysbothinsummerandautumn,andlooksverymuchlikerainbow.SoithasthenameoftheHoveringRainbowBridge.LocatedontheXixiuRidge(theWestEmbroideryRidge)oftheLishanMountain,theremainsofthebeacontoweroftheWesternZhouDynastyseemeasytoidentify.Thebe
25、acontowerwasmostlybuiltatthetopofthemountaintogiveborderalarminancienttimes.Itwasconstantlyunderspecialcontrol.Oncetheenemieswerepressingontowardstheborder,thebeacontowerbegantotakeeffect:itwasmadetosmokeinthedaytimewhilesetonfireatnight.ThestorygoesthatBaoSi,QueenoftheWesternZhoudynastywashighlyhon
26、ored,yetshenevercrackedasmile.KingYoutriedmanywaystoputasmileonherface,buthefailedoverandoveragain.He“calledhiscourtbandtotollbellsandbeatgongs”,andshepulledalongface.Thenthebandwereaskedto“playthebamboofluteandstrings”andsheremaineddispleased.Afterwards,“maidsofhonourservedwine,festivelysingingandd
27、ancing,”andshedidnotletoutasmileatall.“Youdontlikemusic!Whatonearthareyoufondof?”theKingasked.“Inearlyhavealikingfornothing.ButIcanstillwellrememberIlikedtogiveeartothesoundoftearingapieceofcolouredsilkwhenIwasachild.Itwasclearanfmelodious,”shereplied.KingYousaidinexcitement,“Thatisverysimple.Howcom

31、avebeenallright.Ihavejustbeenjokingwithyou.”Whentheygotthis,theylookedateachotherinblankdismay,andleftdisappointed.Sureenough,BaoSiburstintolaughter,strokingherhandswhenshenoticedallthetroopscomeinvainandgonoisily.Accordingly,GuoShifugotaprizeofonethousandpiecesofgold.LateronKingYoudidsomoreoftentha
32、nnot.In771B.C.QuanRong(athenminoritytribe)stagedanarmedrebellionagainsttheWesternZhouDynasty.KingYouorderedurgentlytosetthebeacontoweronfire,butallthesovereignrulersremainedunmoved.ConsequentlyKingYuwaskilled,andBaoSiwastakenaway.TheWesternZhoudynastyvanished.HereincometheChineseidiom“Asinglesmilecostsonethousandpiecesofgold”and“Thesovereignrulersarefooledbythebeaconfire.”
