13、r 2 Joseph Sedley Meets Becky Sharp Becky said to Amelia that Joseph was very handsome. She ate curry and joked about her discomfort. She was charming and friendly. Everyone liked her. Becky said kind things to his parents. She was nice to Josephs mother and was amused by his fathers jokes. Joseph S
14、edley was a kind and shy person. He liked Becky, but was nervous around people. He could not really believe that Becky liked him, but he liked the idea of marrying her. His parents liked her and wanted Joseph to be happy. The group was supposed to go out but ended up staying in. Joseph and Becky tal
15、ked happily. Joseph thought about asking Becky to marry him when they went out. Chapter 3 Becky Sharp Meets Sir Pitt Crawley Joseph got drunk and did not ask Becky to marry him. Joseph acted very poorly because he was so nervous. He almost started a fight. 2. George teased Joseph. He wanted Joseph t
16、o give up on marrying Becky because she had no money. George did not like Becky and did not want Joseph to marry her. Joseph went away the next day. 3. Becky sadly went off to her new position as a teacher and was surprised when she met Sir Pitt Crawley. 4. She thought Sir Pitt was a servant because
17、 he met her at the door. He acted like a very ignorant and mean man. He did not want to spend any money. Chapter 4 The Crawleys of Queens Crawley Sir Pitts first wife was rich, but he did not like her. When she died, he married a poor girl. Nobody liked her. Sir Pitt had two sons from his first marr
18、iage. The older one was Pitt, who tried to be a good man. Pitt went to a different church and worked in parliament. The younger one was Rawdon, who joined the army and liked sport and gambling. Rawdon did not like his older brother. Becky was the governess for Viola and Rose, the two daughters from
19、the second wife. She also helped Sir Pitt manage the estate. Sir Pitt had a brother, Bute, who lived next door with his wife and children, and a sister, Miss Crawley, who was very rich but never married. Becky became very friendly with all of them, but especially with Rawdon and Miss Crawley. Chapte
20、r 5 George Buys a New Shirt 1. Everybody thought that George loved Amelia and spent a lot of time with her. None of his friends thought that Amelia was good enough for George. 2. George thought Amelia was nice, but he did not love her. He treated her letters poorly and did not write to her much. Geo
21、rge really spent most of the time playing billiards with his friends while Amelia waited for him to visit her. 3. Dobbin convinced George to be kinder to Amelia and to write her a letter. Dobbin lent George money to buy a present for Amelia, but he spent it on himself. 4. Georges parents did not wan
22、t him to marry Amelia anymore. His father warned him that Amelias father was losing money and told him that he should find another girl to marry. Even though the parents had arranged the marriage years ago, Georges parents did not want a poor girl in their family. Chapter 6 “Please Marry Me!” Becky
23、was trying hard to get money and power. Miss Crawley was sick and took Becky with her to live in London. Becky acted as a companion to Miss Crawley and kept her friend away. Miss Crawley gave her jewels. Becky introduced Miss Crawley to George and Amelia. Becky was very rude to George and had discov
24、ered that he gambled. Rawdon was in love with Becky. Mrs. Bute encouraged him to marry her. She thought that Miss Crawley would be angry about this and would then leave all her money to Bute. Lady Crawley died, quietly and unloved. Sir Pitt asked Becky to marry him. Becky refused his proposal becaus
25、e she had a shocking secret. Chapter 7 Bad News for Everybody Becky would not tell anybody why she refused to marry Sir Pitt. She was frightened and confused. 2. When she finally told them that she had married Rawdon, they were all angry with her and Rawdon. They refused to speak to them. Sir Pitt w
26、as so angry that he gave away Beckys clothes. 3. Mrs. Bute was happy about the marriage. She wanted Miss Crawley to leave her lots of money when she died. Mrs. Bute came to London to look after Miss Crawley. She was very happy because her plan was working. She told Miss Crawley lots of bad things ab
27、out Becky. 4. Amelias family became very poor, and Georges family did not want to be friends with them anymore. Amelias father lost a lot of money and the family had to sell everything and move into a small house. Mr. Osborne told George that he was never to see Amelia again. Dobbin visited Amelia a
28、nd saw how sad she was. He convinced George to visit her. George went to see Amelia because he felt bad. Chapter 8 Everybody Goes to Brighton Mrs. Bute had a plan. She did not want Becky to visit Miss Crawley, so she kept the old lady like a prisoner. The doctors warned her that she was making Miss
29、Crawley ill by looking after her too well. She kept her room dark and made everyone whisper. She then took Miss Crawley to Brighton to avoid Becky. The army was ordered to go to Belgium to fight Napoleon. The young men got ready for war. George quarreled with his father and married Amelia. The weddi
30、ng was a secret. Dobbin told Georges father that he should let his son marry Amelia, but Mr. Osborne would not listen. He wanted George to marry Miss Swartz, a rich girl, and he rewrote his will when he heard about Georges marriage. Chapter 9 Dobbin Brings the News Rawdon and Becky went to Brighton
31、and soon met with George and Amelia there. 2. Becky made friends with George, and Rawdon won money from him by playing billiards. Amelia felt like George liked Becky more than her. Dobbin arrived in Brighton to tell George about his meeting with Mr. Osborne and about the order for the army to go to
32、war in Belgium. George was unhappy because Dobbin did not bring good news from his father. 3. Mrs. Bute had to leave Brighton because her husband had an accident and was hurt. 4. With Mrs. Bute out of the way, Becky tried to make friends with Miss Crawley again. However, Miss Crawley refused to see
33、her, knowing that Becky was only after her money. She did not want to see Becky again. Chapter 10 Over the Sea to War The two young couples as well as Dobbin and Joseph all returned to London, where George continued to live like a rich man. George still thought his father would send him more money a
34、nd would change his mind. A few days later, they all went to Brussels for the war against Napoleon. In Brussels, they enjoyed dinner parties and operas while they waited for the war to begin. They met a lot of important people. Amelia was 4not happy with the way she was treated. The noble ladies wer
35、e very cold to her. George spent more and more time with Becky instead of Amelia, who was sad and lonely. He wrote Becky a note and gave it to her at a ball. The men were called away to the war. George felt guilty for the way he treated Amelia and wished he had not written the note. He wrote a lette
36、r to his father to thank him and say goodbye, in case he was killed in the battle. George then left to join his regiment. Chapter 11 Life and Death in War 1. Amelia was very afraid that George would be killed when the call to battle came and was sick with fear. Becky, however, added up all the money
37、 she had and decided that she could live quite well if Rawdon was killed. 2. At first, the news from the war was bad. It seemed that the English had all been killed in the fight. 3. The people in the city tried to flee. Everyone wanted to get away. Amelia was very frightened, but Mrs. ODowd convince
38、d her to stay. Becky, out of revenge, refused to sell her horses to the wealthy noble family. Instead, she sold them to Joseph for a lot of money, and he fled Brussels without Amelia. Everyone panicked. 4. Later news was better. The battle continued all the next day. The English army won, but George
39、 was killed along with a lot of other men. Chapter 12 Miss Crawley Makes a Decision Miss Crawley needed to make a decision about her money. She read about the war while she was still in Brighton, and Rawdon wrote her another letter about his promotion. Mrs. Bute offered to come and look after her, b
40、ut she replied that she was much better and did not need a nurse. Pitt Crawley came up with a plan, but so did. Mrs. Bute. Pitt sent his friends to Miss Crawley, who liked one of them, Lady Jane, very much. Mrs. Bute sent her son James, but he smoked a pipe in the house and that made Miss Crawley ve
41、ry angry. Becky still hoped that Miss Crawley would be her friend again one day. She did not know that Miss Crawley was very angry with her. She had a baby boy, and this made Miss Crawley very angry again. She told Pitt that if he married Lady Jane she would give her money to him. Chapter 13 Good Fr
42、iends and Bad Friends Mr. Osborne read Georges letter and went to Brussels. He saw where George died. He refused to help Amelia, even when she had a son. 2. Dobbin loved Amelia and helped to take care of her and her son. But one day he visited her and said goodbye. She did not realize that he loved
43、her. 3. Rawdon and Becky lived like rich people, but they did not pay the rent or any of their debts. They were living on credit and on the Crawley name. They only cared about living well. They did not care that they were hurting people around them. 4. Becky only cared about being rich and meeting r
44、ich people. She made friends with rich people like Lord Steyne, but she hardly ever saw her son. She did not like him, but Rawdon loved him. Chapter 14 Life as a Widow Amelias life carried on quietly. She loved her son and spent all her time looking after him and teaching him. She refused to get mar
45、ried, even though many men were interested in her. She was very kind and attractive. Dobbin continued to send gifts from India and help her in other ways, too. He was always thinking of her and her family, but she heard that he would marry Major ODowds sister. Sir Pitt passed away after behaving ver
46、y badly. Mr. Pitt became the new Sir Pitt. He changed all the bad things that his father had done and became friends with Rawdon and Becky again. Chapter 15 Life in Queens Crawley, London, and India Becky and Rawdon became good friends with the new Sir Pitt Crawley and the Bute Crawleys. Becky was v
47、ery kind to Lady Jane and her children. 2. Old Mr. Osborne was still unhappy. He did not want to hear about George or his family. He started to shake when his daughter told him about his grandson. His elder daughter married, but the younger daughter stayed home to look after him. 3. Dobbin was still
48、 in India, where Major ODowds sister wanted to marry him. He was polite to her, but he was not interested in her. 4. Amelia wrote him a letter congratulating him on his wedding, and he was angry.
