While poaching2for trade continues to menace tigers survival, perhaps the greatest long-term threats are the loss of habitat and the decrease of their natural prey. Large commercial plantations3have replaced a lot of tiger habitat in several countries. The WWFs t
12、iger conservation strategy and action plan names seven areas where the chances of long-term tiger conservation are best, and four additional areas where conservation opportunities are good. In each of these areas, the WWF aims to establish and manage effective tiger conservation, reduce the poaching

In 1870, when the human population was 2.4 million, the land:man ratio1 was 2.7. Today, the ratio is 0.35. Almost 70% of elephant habitat lie
18、s outside protected areas, and when elephants lose their habitat, they will die. Sri Lanka has set aside 8,580 square kilometers of land (or 13% of its total area) for nature protection. But most of the conservation areas are small, and farmers living alongside are in conflict with the elephants. Wi
19、th so little room for the elephants, most of the elephants live outside the protected areas. For every wild elephant in Sri Lanka there are 4,760 people, so the conflict between men and elephants is intense2. Between 1950 and 1970, a total of 1,163 elephants died in the wild, while between 1990 and
20、2001, an additional 1,369 died. Elephants are not being killed in Sri Lanka for tusks3; they are not being killed for meat, since no one eats elephant meat; they are not being killed for their leather which has no commercial value. They are being killed simply because they destroy agriculture. The c
