The number of public schools offering single-sex classrooms rose from 4 in 1998 to 540 in 2010 in America. Thought it is supported by some educators

Here comes three main reasons-it will enhance sexual stereotyping, lead to students poor socialization skills and be bad for the development of students personality.The first also the most important reason is that single
4、-sex education enhances sexual stereotyping. In single-sex classes or schools, boys and girls receive education separately in the way that seem to be making most of both genders and trying to dispel sex discrimination, however, it is not the truth. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been
5、investigating single-sex schools across the country and filing lawsuits against those it says promote gender stereotypes. And a psychology professor at Claremont McKenna College in California has testified on behalf of the ACLU. “We are, in fact, enhancing sexual stereotyping.” Many people argue tha
6、t these schools are good for students academic development especially for girls who are offered better chances to study in mathematics and science. While in fact, the conclusion is inaccurate and emphasizes the difference between boys and girls. A meta-analysis of 242 studies conducted between 1990
7、and 2007 published in the November 2010 Psychological Bulletin examines gender differences in math performance and finds that girls perform as well in the subject as boys. So, you see, it is really unreasonable to revive single-sex education.Well, besides enhancing sexual stereotyping, single-sex ed
8、ucation will lead to students poor socialization skills. Here comes a joke, a girl in all-girls school called her father a month after she came to the school “hey, dad. I am so happy to hear you again. Your poor girl hasnt talked to a boy for a whole month! Believe it or not, a whole month!” It is a
9、dmitted that students in single-sex classrooms will one day live and work side-by-side with members of the opposite sex. Such way of educating limits their opportunity to work cooperatively and live harmony with members of the opposite sex. Many parents send their children to single-sex class or sch
10、ool to protect them from sex distraction, however, the lack of experience with opposite sex will do harm to their socialization skills, thus becomes a threat to their better development which cant be fixed by any academic achievement. In this point of view, to revive single-sex education is just out
11、 of acceptance.In addition, it is also bad for the development of students personality. According to the Great Schools website, the teaching style in a single-sex classroom could be ineffective or detrimental for students who dont have gender-specific personalities. Actually, not all males or female
12、s have the same disposition. As a result, gender differences in learning are not always the same. Richard Kwon, a male student at an all-boys college preparatory school, says students have to act tough to avoid being teased, according to an article at Spark Action. So, we can imagine that a sensitiv
13、e, conversational, artistic boy might struggle in an all boys classroom, and an assertive, competitive girl might not get along well with her highly feminine classmates. Ok, now lets have a look at the three reasons to illustrate that reviving single-sex education is unreasonable. First, it will enh
14、ance sex stereotyping, second, lead to poor socialization skills and third, it is bad for the development of students personality. Taking all this into consideration, we should keep the coeducation pattern, have faith on it and make every effort to improve it both in facilities and the teaching pattern. Thank you!
