In order to put down the workers movements, the British government took some reform measures on surface, such as adopting the system of ten-hour work. But womens status in society had not been improved. The problem of equality between men and wom
9、en was unsolvable at that time. This contradiction in bourgeois society stimulated the womens demand of getting rid of oppression and discrimination from men. It was hard for women to get their deserved social position. As for women living in the upper class, they often chose to marry rich men or ac
10、company their parents. As for women in the lower class, they had to work in the farms or factories. The cruelty of the society drove the female to subvert this unfair reality. So in the novel Jane Eyre represents the new feminine image which the majority of female want to be. As an orphan, she doesn

Instead of yielding to the unfair treatment, she is confronting the unreasonable beating of her overbearing brutal cousin, John. It is human dignity and sanctity that make little Jane has
15、so much courage to fight against her benefactors son. She cant endure that the trample of human dignity just because she is an orphan. The rebellion makes her learn to use severe and critical ways to deal with the ill treatment and humiliation from her aunt, which is out of step with her little age.

She says to her good friend Helen Burns: “when we are struck without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; I am sure we should do so hard to teach the person who struck us never to do it again.” It is the rebel indepen
20、dent spirit that makes her exist in difficult environment. During this period, there are two persons who have a great influence upon Jane, Miss Temple and Helen Burns. Miss Temple is the incarnation of justice and charity, using a profound and extensive heart to help Helen Burns comprehend absurdity
21、 of the world, the shortcoming and weakness of human nature by a broad heart. Under their guidance, Jane Eyre gains extensive knowledge, which makes her independent acting as a teacher. She supports the freedom theory of femininity that if women are given equal civil right, and the opportunity of ed
22、ucation and employment, they will obtain the same status as men. Jane acts as a governess to sustain herself instead of relying on man, only because she thinks it is the foundation of her self-respect.2.3 The struggle for equal statusAs a tutor, she knows what status and identity she is in. She is a
23、n independent worker. When facing the master, she is neither frivolous nor obsequious. In generous manner, she answers his questions without hypocritical feeling. She attracts Mr Rochester deeply by her extraordinary stubbornness and independent spirit power. When she knows Mr Rochester is going to
24、marry Miss Ingrain. Though she has demands for love, she makes a strong protest because her emotion and human dignity are humiliated. “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless. You are wrong! I have as much soul as you and full as much heart! And if god
25、 gives me with beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. It is my spirit that addresses your spirit; we are equal”. What are important for Jane Eyre are not numerous family estate or celebrated family status but equality and dignity.

At this time Jane Eyre confronts a severe test whether she gives up human dignity to become Rochesters mistress or not. For Jane Eyre who has intense self-respect and independent hu

She flees from Thornfield, in order to maintain human dignity. Though she loses much by her leaving, she wins back her dignity and self-respect.3.2 Having a reason
31、able and decisive mindIn Moor, she is saved by a priest St John and his two sisters. With their help, she becomes a teacher in primary school once again. She is working so hard for gaining independence upon life. Similarly, when St John proposes her moor house, she also refuses. Though St John is a
32、good person as a clergyman, he thinks himself as the messenger of God, making Jane the tool of missionary work. He makes an offer of marriage to Jane only because he thinks Jane is suitable for missionarys wife. If Jane Eyre obeys his demanding, it is equal to give up independent human dignity. Jane
33、 Eyre recognizes him not as her ideal lover.3.3 Pursuing the mutual loveOwing to her refusal to Johns marriage, Jane Eyre wants to get together with Rochester in her heart.
